Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and all the people slept through the Fajr prayer until they woke up because of the heat of the sun. Then they moved on a little until the sun had risen high. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the mu'adhdhin, and he called the adhan. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the two rak'ahs (sunnah) before Fajr. Then the mu'adhdhin called the iqamah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Fajr prayer.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) according to what we have mentioned earlier, that al-Hasan's hearing from Imran is established; however, the two Shaykhs did not record the mention of repeating the sunnah prayers. It has an authentic supporting hadith (shahid) as well:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This is a "sahih hadith", and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy). Variation in the chain: There is a difference of opinion over whether al-Hasan al-Basri heard from Imran bin Husayn; al-Hakim holds that he did, while the majority deny it. Yunus is Ibn Ubayd al-Basri. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (443) narrated it through the chain of Wahb bin Baqiyyah from Khalid al-Tahhan. Ahmad (33/19872) also narrated it through Abd al-A'la al-Sami. Reference / Source: Ahmad (19964) and Ibn Hibban (1461, 2650) narrated it through the chain of Hisham bin Hassan from al-Hasan. Reference / Source: Ahmad (19898), al-Bukhari (344) and Muslim (682) narrated it at length through the chain of Awf bin Abi Jamilah from Abu Raja', but it does not mention the sunnah prayer of Fajr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for the hadith of al-Hasan from Imran is the narration of Abu Hurayrah (Muslim 680), whose chain is hasan. Important point: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never abandoned these two sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr, as A'ishah reported (al-Bukhari 1159).
