Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1006

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the first two rak'ahs (of the prayer) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit (for the tashahhud so briefly) as though he were sitting on heated stones. The narrator says: We asked: Until he stood up? He said: Yes, until he stood up.
Mis'ar also narrated it from Sa'd bin Ibrahim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) There is no harm in its narrators except Abd al-Rahman al-Asadi, who is weak but corroborated; however, since Abu Ubaydah's hearing from his father Ibn Mas'ud is not established, this chain is "munqati'". Abu Qilabah is Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/3656; 7/3895, 4155), Abu Dawud (995) and al-Tirmidhi (366) narrated it via routes from Shu'bah. Al-Tirmidhi called it hasan but also pointed to its disconnection.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/4388-4390) and al-Nasa'i (766) narrated it via the chain of Ibrahim bin Sa'd from his father.
(Clarification): "Al-radf" means stones that have been heated by the sun or by fire.
General principle: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that according to the people of knowledge, the sitting for the tashahhud after the first two rak'ahs should not be prolonged and nothing should be added to the tashahhud (i.e., only al-tahiyyat is recited); they said that whoever adds to it must perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness.
