Abu al-Ahwas and Abu Ubaydah (may Allah have mercy on them both) relate that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man should (in prayer) first recite the tashahhud, then send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after that supplicate for himself.
This hadith has also been narrated as a statement of the Prophet from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) with a sahih chain in which one narrator is left unnamed.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (2) The part in brackets was taken from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (2/153), since it had dropped out of the author's manuscripts.
Grading: (3) The hadith is sahih, but this chain is weak because of Ibn Abi Darim (al-Hakim's shaykh), and the condition of his shaykh al-Kindi is unknown; however, this narration is reported through other routes. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/297) narrated it via Abu al-Ahwas (Sallam bin Sulaym). Technical note: Abu Ishaq is Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i; Abu Ubaydah is the son of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud; the Abu al-Ahwas paired with him is Awf bin Malik al-Jushami; and Abd Allah is Ibn Mas'ud.
