Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those men who imitate women, and those women who imitate men.

Abu Ishaq narrates that he heard a man from Banu Tamim saying: I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a man pointing with his finger (i.e., in prayer), and he replied: This is bearing witness to the oneness of Allah. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to use the miswak with such emphasis that we feared a verse of the Qur'an might be revealed about it, and during prostration I saw the whiteness of the blessed armpits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out on the day of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr—most likely Eid al-Fitr—and led two units of prayer. He did not offer any prayer before it nor after it. Then, accompanied by Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and preached to the women and instructed them to give charity. Upon this, the women began to take off their earrings and rings, etc., and give them in charity.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Pharaoh was drowning, Angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) began to stuff mud into his mouth out of fear that he might say «لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ» (and thus escape the punishment for his evil deeds).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not use any living being as a target after tying it up."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

Abu Al-Hakam says that once I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the nabidh of a pitcher, and about dubba’ and hantam. He replied: Whoever wants to consider as forbidden what Allah and His Messenger have declared forbidden, should consider nabidh as forbidden.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "A month can also be complete at twenty-nine days."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the women and children of Banu Hashim to depart early on the night of Muzdalifah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Ad-Dahr in the Fajr prayer on Friday, and in the Jumu'ah prayer he used to recite Surah Al-Jumu'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Sometimes such thoughts come to me that I consider it better to fall from the sky than to utter them. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said "Allahu Akbar" three times and said: "All praise is due to Allah who has turned the matter back to whisperings."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah Munawwarah with the intention of Makkah Mukarramah in the month of Ramadan. He (peace be upon him) was fasting, but when he reached the place of Usfan, he (peace be upon him) had a vessel brought and placed it on his hand so that everyone could see, and then he drank from it. Therefore, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that a traveler has permission whether he fasts or not (he can make it up later).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once his maternal aunt, Sayyida Umm Hufaid (may Allah be pleased with her), presented clarified butter, lizard, and cheese as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate some of the clarified butter and cheese, but due to dislike, he left the lizard. However, others ate it from the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat. If eating it had been forbidden, it would never have been eaten on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he saw the Jews observing the fast on the tenth of Muharram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "What is the special reason for which you fast on this day?" They replied, "This is a very good day; on this day Allah granted deliverance to the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Musa (peace be upon him) fasted on this day." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "You have more right to Musa (peace be upon him) than they do, so you should also fast on this day."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the children of the polytheists, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah knows best — the One who created them — what they would have done when they grew up."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) vessels called Duba’, Naqir, and Muzaffat (which were used for drinking alcohol and whose explanation has already been mentioned several times before).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying when he and a slave of Banu Hashim rode past in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a donkey, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not break his prayer. Similarly, once two girls from Banu Abdul Muttalib came and clung to the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved them aside and continued praying.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Sa'b bin Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him) presented the leg of a donkey to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned it, saying, "We are in the state of Ihram," and at that time blood was dripping from it.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that once I stayed the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came after the 'Isha prayer, performed four rak'ahs, and then slept. He then woke up and said: "Is the child sleeping?" and stood up to pray. I also stood on his left side to join the prayer, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and placed me on his right side. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed five rak'ahs and slept, until I heard the sound of his snoring. Then he went outside and prayed.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was helped by the east wind (the wind that comes from the direction of the door of the Ka'bah), and the people of 'Ad were destroyed by the west wind."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is an ‘Umrah from which we have benefited, so whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him should come out of the state of Ihram, for now ‘Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection."

Abu Al-Bakhtari says that once I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the sale of date palm trees. He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it until he himself tastes from it or lets someone else taste it, and until its weight has been determined. I asked: What is meant by weight? He said: Whoever has dates should weigh them so that he can separate and collect them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying, and during this time, a kid goat tried to pass in front of him, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) avoided it (he did not allow it to pass in front of him).

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that once I stayed the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came after the 'Isha prayer, performed four rak'ahs, and then slept. He then woke up and said: "Is the child sleeping?" and stood up to pray. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out in the month of Ramadan regarding the conquest of Makkah. He (peace be upon him) was fasting. When he reached a place called Qudayd, he (peace be upon him) asked for a glass of milk and drank it, and the people also broke their fast until they reached Makkah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who takes back his gift after giving it is like that of a dog who vomits and then licks it up again."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who takes back his gift after giving it is like that of a dog who vomits and then licks it up again."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not appropriate for any prophet to say that I am better than Yunus bin Matta (peace be upon him), and to attribute himself to his father." Also, while mentioning the night of Mi'raj, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw Musa (peace be upon him), and he appeared to be wheat-colored, tall, and a man of the tribe of Shanu'ah. I saw Isa (peace be upon him), and he was of medium height, reddish-white, and had curly hair. And I also saw Dajjal and Malik, the keeper of Hell."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not appropriate for any prophet to say that I am better than Prophet Yunus bin Matta, and to attribute himself to his father." He replied: This is the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace be upon him), even if it is unpleasant to you.

Abu Hassan says that a man from Banu Hajim asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): O Abu al-Abbas! What is the reality of this fatwa that has become very famous among the people, that whoever performs Tawaf of the House of Allah becomes halal (permissible)? He replied: This is the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace be upon him), even if it is unpleasant to you.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer at Mina. I came riding on a donkey, let it graze, and joined the row (for prayer). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say anything to me, and at that time I was near the age of puberty.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in prayer at the plain of Arafat. I, who was near the age of puberty, and Fadl came riding on a donkey. We passed in front of a row, dismounted from it, left it to graze, and joined the row ourselves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say anything to me.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank Zamzam water while standing.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Haruriyyah sect rebelled, they were all cut off. I said to them: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a treaty with the polytheists at the place of Hudaybiyyah, so he said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ali! Write: This is the agreement according to which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has made peace." The polytheists of Quraysh said: If we considered you to be the Messenger of Allah, we would never fight you. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ali! Erase it. O Allah! You know that I am Your Messenger. Ali! Erase it and write: This is the agreement which Muhammad bin Abdullah has made." I said to the Khawarij: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was better than Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he erased his own name, but by erasing it from the document, he did not cease to be a Prophet. Have I come out of this (i.e., am I free from blame)? The people said: Yes!

Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to me in a letter that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If things were given to people merely on the basis of their claims, many people would make false claims regarding lives and wealth. However, the oath is upon the defendant."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he had not made any bequest to anyone.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a bowl of tharid was presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "Eat from the edges of the bowl (dish), and do not eat from the middle, for indeed, blessing descends in the middle of the food (and spreads to all sides)."
