Musnad Ahmad

Abu al-Tufail says that I was once with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas and Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah, may Allah be pleased with them. Whenever Sayyiduna Muawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by any corner of the Ka'bah, he would touch it. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to touch only the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner. Sayyiduna Muawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him, replied that no part of the House of Allah is to be neglected or abandoned.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married (Sayyidah Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her) while in the state of Ihram, and had cupping done while in the state of Ihram.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man was participating in Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). While in the state of Ihram, he fell from his camel, his neck broke, and he died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bathe him with water mixed with lote tree leaves, shroud him in his two Ihram garments, do not apply perfume to him, and do not cover his head, for he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection reciting the Talbiyah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man was participating in Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). While in the state of Ihram, he fell from his camel, his neck broke, and he died. Then the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that his mother had made a vow, but she passed away before fulfilling it, so what is the ruling? He said: "You should fulfill it on her behalf."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping done, and whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping done, he would have it done on the veins on both sides of the neck. A slave of Banu Bayadah used to perform cupping for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for which he would receive one and a half mudd of wheat daily as wages. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to his masters about this, so they reduced it by half a mudd. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his wages; if this wage had been unlawful, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never have given it to him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Twelve thousand men will set out from Aden to help Allah and His Messenger; these people will be the best among all people between me and them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the mother of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he was not present with her at that time. Later, he presented himself in the court of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! My mother passed away in my absence, so if I give some charity on her behalf, will she benefit from it? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes!” Upon this, he said: Then I make you a witness that I have a garden, and I have given it in charity on her behalf.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Once, near the Ka‘bah, Jibreel (peace be upon him) led me in prayer. He led me in the Zuhr prayer when the sun had passed its zenith and a strap’s length of time had elapsed. He led me in the Asr prayer when the shadow of everything became equal to its length. He led me in the Maghrib prayer at the time when the fasting person breaks his fast. He led me in the ‘Isha prayer after the twilight had disappeared. And he led me in the Fajr prayer at the time when eating and drinking becomes forbidden for the fasting person. Then, on the next day, he led me in the Zuhr prayer when the shadow of everything became equal to its length, and he led me in the Asr prayer when the shadow of everything became twice its length. He led me in the Maghrib prayer at the time when the fasting person breaks his fast. He led me in the ‘Isha prayer in the first third of the night, and he led me in the Fajr prayer when it was well lit. Then he turned to me and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! This has been the time of the Prophets (peace be upon them) before you; the time for prayer is between these two times.”

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain with minor differences.

It is narrated, most likely as a marfu’ report, from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his head from ruku’, after saying «سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ», he would say: «اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ مِلْءَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمِلْءَ الْأَرْضِ وَمِلْءَ مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْدُ» “O Allah! O our Lord! All praise is for You, which fills the heavens and fills the earth and fills whatever else You will.”

Another hadith with this chain is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called (a slave of Banu Bayadah, and he) performed cupping. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him (one and a half mudd of wheat as) wages. If this wage had been unlawful, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never have given it to him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) vessels called dubba’, hantam, naqir, and muzaffat (which were used for drinking wine and whose explanation has already been mentioned several times before).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A previously married woman has more right over herself than her guardian, but a virgin woman must be asked for her permission, and her silence is her permission."

Abu al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, says that a person asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, about this issue: If a slave gives his wife two divorces, then after freeing himself wants to marry her, can he do so or not? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, replied: He can do so. He asked: On whose authority are you narrating this? He replied: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave this very verdict. Abdullah narrates from his father, Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, that someone asked Muammar: O Abu Urwah! Who is this Abu al-Hasan? He has lifted a very great rock.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the conquest of Makkah, it was the month of Ramadan. There were ten thousand Muslims accompanying him, and it had been eight and a half years since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had come to Madinah Munawwarah. At the time of departure, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the Muslims were fasting, but when they reached the place of Kudayd, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) broke his fast.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that after the blessed passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the Prophet’s Mosque, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was speaking before the people. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) walked to the room where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away, that is, the sacred chamber of Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her). Upon reaching there, he removed the striped sheet that had been placed over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and as soon as he saw the radiant face, he leaned over it and began to kiss it. Then he said: By Allah! Allah will never combine two deaths upon you. The death that has come upon you is such that after it, you will never experience death again.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not recite (aloud) in Zuhr and Asr prayers, and he used to say that in those prayers in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to recite, he recited, and where he was commanded to remain silent, he remained silent. And for you, in the person of Allah’s Messenger, is the best example, and “your Lord is not forgetful.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah, he refrained from entering the House of Allah (the Ka'bah) while the idols were present inside. At the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), everything was removed from there, among which were also the statues of Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them), in whose hands were arrows used for divination. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah's curse be upon them! They knew well that these two never used these arrows for dividing anything." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the House of Allah, proclaimed the greatness of Allah in its corners, and came out. On this occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform prayer inside the House of Allah.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him from Muzdalifah during the night along with the luggage.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not consider eating unripe dates to be good and used to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the delegation of Banu Abdul Qais from «مُزَّاءِ», and I fear that what is meant by this is unripe dates.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Ad-Dahr in the Fajr prayer on Friday.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Ad-Dahr in the Fajr prayer on Friday.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever from my Ummah has sent ahead two young children as a treasure, he will enter Paradise." Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted: "May my father be sacrificed for you, tell me, what is the ruling if someone has lost only one child?" He replied: "O woman who has been granted success! The same ruling applies to her." She asked again: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What if someone from your Ummah has no treasure at all?" He replied: "Then I will be the treasure for my Ummah, and they will not find anyone like me."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said while he was seated on the pulpit: "People should stop neglecting Jumu'ah, otherwise Allah Almighty will seal their hearts and will write them among the heedless."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I saw a man who entered the mosque and began to pray standing; he would say the takbeer while raising his head, bowing, and rising from the two rak‘ahs. Finding this strange, I mentioned this incident to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "May your mother lose you! The prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was like this."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). I placed water for his ablution at night. Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This water has been placed for you by Abdullah ibn Abbas." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Grant him understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation and explanation of the Book."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, a woman said, "Uthman! Congratulations to you for Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked angrily towards that woman and said, "How do you know?" She replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He was your horseman and companion (so after death, he will surely go to Paradise)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "By Allah! Even though I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not know what will happen to me." Hearing this, people became fearful regarding Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him). But when the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) daughter, Sayyida Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go and join the best of our predecessors, Uthman bin Maz'un," (by which his being in Paradise was established). Upon this, the women began to weep, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started hitting them with a whip. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his hand and said, "Umar! Stop." Then he said to the women, "You are allowed to weep, but protect yourselves from the wailing and screaming of Satan." Then he said, "As long as it is a matter of the eye and the heart, it is from Allah and is a mercy, but when it reaches the hand and the tongue, then it is from Satan." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat at the edge of the grave, and Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) kept weeping at his side, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to wipe Sayyida Fatimah's (may Allah be pleased with her) eyes with his garment out of affection.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me while I was playing with the children. I went and hid behind a door. I did not realize that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had caught me, and he lovingly grabbed me by the nape and playfully threw me to the ground. Then he sent me to Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) to call him. He was the scribe of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I ran to him and said, "Go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he has some work with you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer on the day of Eid before the sermon, without the call to prayer, then delivered the sermon, then took the hand of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and went to the women, admonished and advised them, and while returning, instructed Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to "Go to these women and encourage them to give charity."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made 'Ijlaani and his wife perform li'an, and at that time his wife was pregnant. 'Ijlaani said, "By Allah! Since we irrigated the field after grafting the trees for two months, I have not gone near her." The woman's husband was a man with shins and arms, and his hair was white tinged with redness. The woman was accused with Sharik bin Sahma', and the child that was born to her was extremely dark, with curly hair, and his arms were full. Ibn Shaddad asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Is this the same woman about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that if I were to enforce the hadd of rajm (stoning) on anyone without witnesses, I would have enforced it on this woman?" He replied: "No, that was the woman who performed li'an in the time of Islam."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate meat and then performed prayer without renewing his ablution.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) at a place called Sarf while he was in the state of Ihram, and after completing Hajj, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning, he reached the same place and spent the night with her.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mixing unripe and ripe dates, or mixing raisins and dates together to make nabidh (a fermented drink), and a letter of this nature was also written to the people of Jurash.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the time of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) passing drew near, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bring me writing materials so that I may write something for you after which you will never go astray.” At that time, there were many people in the house, among whom was Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is overcome by severe pain, and you already have the Noble Qur’an with you, and the Book of Allah is sufficient for us. At this, there arose a difference of opinion among the people. Some were of the opinion that writing materials should be presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could dictate something to them, and some agreed with the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the noise and disagreement increased, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Get up from me.” Upon this, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: Alas! Because of the people’s disagreement and noise, the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) writing was prevented.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he saw the Jews observing the fast on the tenth of Muharram. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "What is the special reason for which you fast on this day?" They replied, "This is a great day; on this day Allah granted deliverance to the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Musa (peace be upon him) fasted on this day." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have more right to Musa than you." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself fasted on this day and also ordered his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to fast on this day.
