It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the chiefs of Quraysh once gathered in the Hatim and made a pact and covenant in the names of their false gods—Lat, Uzza, Manat, Na’ila, and Isaf—that if they saw Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they would all stand together and would not part from him without killing him. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard this and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, saying, “The chiefs of Quraysh are making a pact concerning you that if they see you, they will advance and kill you, and each one of them is thirsty for your blood.” Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Daughter! Bring me some water for ablution.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and went to Masjid al-Haram. When those people saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they said, “Here he is,” but then, for some reason, they lowered their gazes, their chins dropped onto their chests, and they sat bewildered in their places. They could neither raise their eyes to look at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor could any of them stand up and move towards him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked towards them until he stood by their heads, took a handful of dust, and said, “May these faces be disfigured,” and threw that dust upon them. Whoever among them that dust fell upon was killed in a state of disbelief on the day of Badr.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that the polytheists always wished that the Persians would prevail over the Romans, because the Persians were idolaters, while the Muslims wished that the Romans would prevail over the Persians because they were People of the Book. They mentioned this to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Romans will be victorious." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this prophecy before the Quraysh. They said: Set a term between us and you; if, according to our view, the Persians prevail, you will give us such and such, and if, according to your view, the Romans prevail, we will give you such and such. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) set a term of five years, but during that period the Romans did not appear to be victorious, so he mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not set a term within ten years?" Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in fact, the word «بضع» that appears in the Qur'an applies to anything less than ten. Thus, within that period, the Romans became victorious, and this is the background of the opening verses of Surah Ar-Rum.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from doing so and said: "Bring to me whatever provisions you have." So the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) brought their provisions and spread out the dining cloth. Everyone ate together (yet some was still left), and when they left from there, each of them filled their leather containers with it and took it away. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward until he entered Masjid al-Haram. The polytheists were sitting towards Hatim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed idtiba' with his cloak (i.e., he passed the cloak under his right shoulder and placed it over his left shoulder, leaving his right shoulder bare) and said: "Let these people not perceive any weakness in you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) touched the Black Stone and began the tawaf, until when he reached the Yemeni Corner, he walked at his normal pace up to the corner of the Black Stone. The polytheists, seeing this, said: "They are not even content with just walking; they are bounding like gazelles."
