Hadith 2356
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that regarding a mukatab (contracted slave) who has been set free (and someone kills him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this ruling: “For the portion of the contract that he has paid, he will be given the blood money of a free man, and for the portion that remains unpaid, for which he is still a slave, the blood money of a slave will be given.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when there was consensus to give the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a bath, at that time only the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were present in the house, such as his uncle Sayyiduna Abbas, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Fadl, Sayyiduna Qutham, Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid, and Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with them all). Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Aws bin Khawli Ansari Khazraji Badri (may Allah be pleased with him), who was standing at the door of the house, called out to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O Ali! I swear by Allah, include us as well." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Come in," so he also entered and was present at that occasion, although he did not participate in the bathing. He supported the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against his chest, while the shirt was still on the body. Sayyiduna Abbas, Sayyiduna Fadl, and Sayyiduna Qutham (may Allah be pleased with them) were turning the blessed side, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was assisting them, Sayyiduna Usama and Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with them both) were pouring water, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was giving the bath. Nothing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was exposed that is usually exposed of the deceased. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), while bathing, kept saying: "May my parents be sacrificed for you, how pure you were in life and in death." It should be noted that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was bathed with water and lote tree leaves. After completing the bath, the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) dried the blessed body of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then did what is done with the deceased, that is, he was wrapped in three garments, two of which were white and one was a striped red Yemeni sheet. Then it was found that Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to make a box-shaped grave as the people of Makkah did, and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him)—whose real name was Zayd bin Sahl—used to make a side niche grave for the people of Madinah. So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called two men, sent one to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), and prayed, "O Allah! Choose what is better for Your Prophet." Thus, the man who went to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) found him and brought him, and in this way, a side niche grave was prepared for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): O Abu al-Abbas! I am greatly astonished at the difference among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding the Ihram of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: At this time, I know this matter among the people more than anyone else. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed only one Hajj in his entire life; from here the difference among the people arose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with the intention of Hajj. When he had prayed two rak'ahs in the mosque of Dhul-Hulaifah, he assumed Ihram while sitting right there. People heard this and preserved it in their minds. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his ride. When the she-camel straightened up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he again uttered the words of intention for Ihram. Some people heard these words because people used to come in different groups; they did not all come together at once. These people later began to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assumed Ihram when the she-camel straightened up with him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward. When he ascended the height of Bayda, he again recited the Talbiyah. Some people remembered this time and began to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assumed Ihram at the height of Bayda. Whereas the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had made the intention of Ihram while sitting on his prayer place, but he repeated the Talbiyah at the time when his ride started moving, and also when he ascended the height of Bayda. Therefore, whoever wants to act upon the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) should make the intention of Ihram while sitting at his place after completing the two rak'ahs of Ihram.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the sacrifice of one hundred camels on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage. Out of these, he slaughtered thirty with his own blessed hand, then he ordered Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and he slaughtered the rest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him: "Distribute all of their meat, blankets, and skins among the people. Do not give the butcher anything from it as payment. And from each camel, set aside a long piece of meat for us. Then cook all of them together in a pot so that we may eat its meat and drink its broth." Accordingly, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) did so.

Kuraib, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), says: Once I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), "O Abu al-Abbas! You say that a person who is not taking a sacrificial animal with him for Hajj should perform Tawaf of the House of Allah and, after performing Umrah, become halal (come out of the state of Ihram), and that the pilgrim who is taking a sacrificial animal with him, his Hajj and Umrah are combined. But people do not say this?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied, "Woe to you! When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) set out, they mentioned only Hajj at the time of entering Ihram. Later, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded that 'whoever does not have a sacrificial animal should perform Tawaf of the House of Allah and, after performing Umrah, become halal (come out of Ihram).' A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah! This is the Ihram of Hajj?' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'This is not Hajj, rather it is Umrah.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslims were fasting, but when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the place of Kadid, he called for a vessel and placed it on his hand so that everyone could see, then he broke his fast, and the Muslims also broke their fast.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the polytheists used to part their hair, while the People of the Book would leave them as they were, and the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that in matters where no command had come, he preferred to follow and agree with the People of the Book rather than the polytheists. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also not part his hair, but later he (peace and blessings be upon him) started parting his hair.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man married a woman from the Ansar tribe of Banu Ajlan. He spent the night with her, and in the morning he said that he did not find her to be a virgin. This matter was presented before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the girl and asked her, and she said: Why not, I was indeed a virgin. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered both of them to perform li'an (mutual cursing) and had the girl given her dowry.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a Jewish man and woman to be stoned at the door of the mosque. When the Jew felt the pain of the stones, he began to bend over to shield the woman, until both of them perished. In reality, the punishment that was given to them was the punishment prescribed by Allah, because proof of adultery had been established regarding both of them, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out this punishment upon them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to Caesar, the ruler of Rome, inviting him to Islam. He sent this letter with Sayyiduna Dihyah Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him), instructing him to deliver it to the governor of Busra so that he could forward it to Caesar. Accordingly, the governor of Busra delivered the letter to Caesar. Since Allah Almighty had granted Caesar victory over the Persian armies, he had, in gratitude, traveled on foot from Homs to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Carpets were laid out for him along the entire route during this journey.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that when Caesar received the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) letter, he read it and said, “Find me a man from his people so that I may ask him some questions.” Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan ibn Harb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that Heraclius (the king of Rome) sent a man to him while he was among a group of Quraysh horsemen who had come to Syria as traders. This incident occurred at a time when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had made a limited truce with Abu Sufyan and the disbelievers of Quraysh.

So the Quraysh came to Heraclius, and they were in Aelia (Jerusalem) at that time. Heraclius summoned them to his court, surrounded by the Roman dignitaries. He called all the Quraysh closer to him and summoned his interpreter. Addressing the Quraysh, he asked, “Who among you is the closest in lineage to the man who claims to be a prophet?” Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I am the closest in lineage among them.” Upon hearing this, Heraclius said, “Bring Abu Sufyan closer to me and keep his companions near him, standing behind him.” Then he said to his interpreter, “Tell these people that I will ask Abu Sufyan about this man (who claims to be a prophet). If he lies to me, you should immediately refute him.”

(Abu Sufyan says:) By Allah! If I had not been ashamed that people would accuse me of lying, I would have certainly fabricated things about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The first thing Heraclius asked me was, “How is his lineage among you?” I replied, “He is of noble lineage among us.” Then Heraclius asked, “Has anyone among you ever made such a claim (of prophethood) before him?” I said, “No.” Heraclius asked, “Was there any king among his ancestors?” I said, “No.” Heraclius asked, “Have the influential people followed him or the weak?” I said, “Rather, the weak have followed him.” Heraclius asked, “Are his followers increasing or decreasing?” I said, “They are increasing.” Heraclius asked, “Does anyone, after embracing his religion, become displeased with it and leave it?” I said, “No.” Heraclius asked, “Does he ever break his promises?” I said, “No, and we are currently in a truce with him. We do not know what he will do during this period.” (Abu Sufyan says:) Other than this statement, I could not find any opportunity to insert anything against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Heraclius asked, “Have you ever fought him?” I said, “Yes.” He asked, “How did your battles with him go?” I said, “The fighting between us and him is like a seesaw; sometimes he prevails over us, and sometimes we prevail over him.” Heraclius asked, “What does he command you to do?” I said, “He tells us to worship Allah alone and not to associate anything with Him, and to abandon what our forefathers used to worship. He commands us to pray, to speak the truth, to be pious, and to maintain family ties.”

After this, Heraclius said to his interpreter, “Tell Abu Sufyan: I asked you about his lineage, and you said he is of noble lineage among you. Indeed, all the prophets are sent from the noblest lineage of their people. I asked you if anyone among you had made such a claim before him, and you said no. If you had said yes, I would have thought that he was imitating what had been said before him. I asked you if any of his ancestors was a king, and you said no. If you had said yes, I would have thought that he was a man seeking to reclaim his ancestral kingdom. I asked you if you ever accused him of lying before he made this claim, and you said no. I know that a person who does not lie to people would not lie about Allah. I asked you whether the influential or the weak followed him, and you said the weak. Indeed, they are the followers of the prophets. I asked you whether his followers are increasing or decreasing, and you said increasing. This is the nature of faith until it reaches its perfection. I asked you if anyone, after embracing his religion, becomes displeased and leaves it, and you said no. This is how faith is when its delight enters the hearts. I asked you if he ever breaks his promises, and you said no. Likewise, the prophets never break their promises. I asked you what he commands you to do, and you said he commands you to worship Allah alone, not to associate anything with Him, forbids you from worshipping idols, and commands you to pray, speak the truth, and be pious. If what you say is true, then soon he will own the very place beneath my feet. I knew from the previous scriptures that he was going to appear, but I did not think he would be from among you. If I knew I could reach him, I would go to great lengths to meet him, and if I were with him, I would certainly wash his feet.”

Then Heraclius called for the (blessed) letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and had it read. In it was written: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Allah’s servant and His Messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), to the ruler of Rome. Peace be upon him who follows guidance. After this, I invite you to Islam. Accept Islam and you will be safe, and Allah will grant you your reward twice over. But if you turn away, then upon you will be the sin of your subjects. And: ‘O People of the Book! Come to a word that is just between us and you: that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. But if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are Muslims (submitting to Allah).’”

Abu Sufyan says: When Heraclius had finished saying what he wanted and finished reading the letter, there was a great commotion, voices were raised, and we were expelled from there. I said to my companions, when we were turned out, “Look! The matter of the son of Abu Kabshah (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) has become so great that even the king of the Romans fears him.” I always remained certain that he would soon prevail, until Allah compelled me to accept Islam.

Ubaidullah says that I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) if he remembered any dream of the Prophet (peace be upon him), then tell me. He said that it has been mentioned before me that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I was sleeping, and it seemed as if two gold bangles were placed in my hands. I became anxious and felt great aversion to them. I was commanded, so I blew on both of them, and they both flew away. I interpret this as referring to two great liars who will appear." Ubaidullah says that one of them was Aswad Ansi, whom Sayyiduna Fayruz (may Allah be pleased with him) dealt with in Yemen, and the other was Musaylimah the Liar.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before his passing. The people asked: "Abu al-Hasan! How is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Now, since morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is, all praise is due to Allah, well." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that upon this, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) took the hand of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Do you not see? By Allah! From this illness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will not recover and will pass away. I recognize the state that overtakes the faces of the sons of Abdul Muttalib at the time of death. So come, let us go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him who will have the caliphate after him. If it is to be among us, we will know about it, and if it is to be among others, then we will speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he may advise the coming caliph regarding us." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! If we request this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he refuses to grant our request, then people will never give us the caliphate. Therefore, I will never make this request to him."

Muhammad bin Amr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I presented myself before Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, on the day after Jumu'ah. At that time, he was in the house of Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, because Sayyidah Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, had bequeathed this to him. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, would finish the Jumu'ah prayer, a mat would be spread for him there and he would come and sit there to answer people's questions. So a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, about the ruling of ablution after eating food cooked on fire. I was listening. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, raised his hand towards his eyes — at that time he had become blind — and said: I have seen with these two eyes of mine that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed ablution for the Zuhr prayer in one of his chambers. After a short while, Sayyiduna Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, came to call for prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up to come out, and while he was still standing at the door of his chamber, a gift of meat and bread sent by a companion, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went back into the chamber with his companions and the food was presented before them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, himself ate from it and the noble companions, may Allah be pleased with them, also ate. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up with his companions to perform the prayer, and neither he nor any of his companions touched water, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in prayer in that state. The narrator says that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, remembered the last matters of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and at that time he had become mature.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the tribe of Banu Sa’d bin Bakr sent Dhamam bin Tha’labah to present himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He came, made his camel sit at the door of the Prophet’s Mosque, tied it, and entered the mosque. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among his companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Dhamam was a strong man, and he had a lot of hair on his head, which he had tied into two braids. He came walking and stopped by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “Who among you is Ibn Abd al-Muttalib?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I am.” He asked, “Is your name Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied in the affirmative. Dhamam said, “O Ibn Abd al-Muttalib! I want to ask you some questions. It is possible that there may be some harshness or severity in them, so please do not mind.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I do not mind. Ask whatever you wish to ask.” Dhamam said, “I swear by Allah, Who is your Lord, the Lord of those before you and those who will come after you, did Allah send you to us as a Messenger?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes!” Then Dhamam said, “I ask you by Allah, Who is your Lord, the Lord of those before you and those who will come after you, did Allah command you to order us to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, and to abandon all those deities and partners whom our forefathers used to worship?” He replied, “Yes!” Then Dhamam, using the same oath, asked, “Did Allah command you to order us to perform these five prayers?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes!” Then Dhamam asked, one by one, about the obligations of Islam, such as zakat, fasting, Hajj, and all other laws, and each time he would make the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) swear in the same words. When Dhamam finished, he said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. I will continue to perform these obligations, and I will abstain from whatever you have forbidden me, and I will not add or subtract anything from it.” Then he mounted his camel and left. After he left, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If this man with two braids has spoken the truth, he will enter Paradise.” Dhamam, as soon as he left, loosened the rope of his camel until he reached his people. The people gathered around him. The first thing Dhamam said was, “Lat and Uzza are very evil things.” The people said, “Dhamam! Stop, beware of leprosy and madness, beware (that by speaking ill of these idols, you may not be afflicted with these things).” He said, “Alas! By Allah! Neither of these things can harm nor benefit. Allah has sent His Messenger, revealed His Book, and saved you from those things in which you were previously involved. I have borne witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. And I have brought you some commands from him and some things from which he forbids you.” By Allah! Before evening, every man and woman of his tribe had accepted Islam. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says, “We have not seen any representative of a people better than Sayyiduna Dhamam bin Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him).”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Salat al-Khawf (prayer of fear) used to be performed in the same way as nowadays your guards pray behind your imams. However, what used to happen was that the army would be in the mountain passes, and a group of people would stand; all of them would be with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When one group with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prostration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand up, and the group that was standing would perform the prostration themselves. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, all would stand. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would bow (ruku‘), and all the people would bow as well. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would prostrate, those who had stood the first time would join him in prostration, and those who had prostrated with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the first time would stand up. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit, and those who had prostrated with him at the end would also sit, then those who were standing would perform the prostration. Then they would sit, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would conclude the prayer with salam, gathering all of them together.

Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that people think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if you are not in a state of major impurity, still perform ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Jumu'ah, wash your head, and apply perfume"? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied that I do not know about the perfume, but the matter of ghusl is correct.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Rukanah bin Abd Yazid—who belonged to Banu Muttalib—gave his wife three divorces in a single sitting. Later, he became extremely distressed over this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "How did you divorce her?" He replied: "I gave her three divorces." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you give all three divorces in one sitting?" He replied: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then it counts as one. If you wish, you may take her back." So he took her back. For this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) held the opinion that divorce should be given during each period of purity.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your brothers were martyred at the Battle of Uhud, Allah placed their souls in the bodies of green birds, who descend upon the rivers of Paradise, eat from its fruits, and reside in golden lamps under the shade of the Throne. When they saw the excellence of their food and drink, and such a wonderful place for rest, they said: 'If only our brothers could know what Allah has prepared for us, so that they would not lose interest in Jihad and would not turn away from fighting.' Allah said: 'I will convey this message to them.' So Allah revealed these verses of Surah Al-Imran to His Prophet: «﴿وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ﴾ [آل عمران : 169]»."
