Humayd bin Munhib al-Ta'i said: Hind bint Utbah was married to al-Fakih bin al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi. Al-Fakih was one of the leading young men of Quraysh, and he had a house for guests which people would enter without permission. One day that house was empty, and al-Fakih and Hind were lying in it at midday. Then al-Fakih went out for some need of his, and a man from among those who used to frequent it came and entered the house. When he saw the woman, he turned back and fled. Al-Fakih saw him as he was coming out of the house, so he came to Hind, kicked her with his foot and said: Who was this who was with you? She said: No one was with me, and I knew nothing until you woke me. He said: Go back to your family. And the people began to talk about her. Her father said to her: My daughter, the people have said a great deal about you, so tell me your story. If the man is telling the truth about you, I will secretly send someone to kill him so that the talk about you comes to an end; and if he is lying, I will take him for judgement to one of the soothsayers of Yemen. So Hind swore to her father by the kind of oath people used to swear (in that era) that the man was lying against her. So Utbah said to al-Fakih: You have accused my daughter of a grave matter, so come with me to one of the soothsayers of Yemen for judgement. So Utbah set out with a group of Banu Abd Manaf and al-Fakih set out with a group of Banu Makhzum, and Hind and some women set out with them. When they drew near that land and said, "Now we are going to the soothsayer," Hind's state changed and her face altered. Her father said to her: I see that your state has changed, and this can only be because of something blameworthy; so why did this not happen before the people witnessed this journey of ours? She said: No, by Allah, O my father, it is not because of anything blameworthy; rather, I know that you are going to a human being who errs and is right, and I fear that he may brand me with a mark that will become a disgrace for me among the Arabs. Her father said: I will test him before he says anything about your matter. So he whistled to his horse to stir it until its organ came out; then he took a grain of wheat, put it into its opening and tied it with a strap. When they came to the soothsayer in the morning, he honoured them and slaughtered an animal for them. When they had sat down, Utbah said to him: We have come to you about a matter, and I have hidden something for you in order to test you, so see what it is. The soothsayer said: A namirah (a small thing) in a kamrah (the tip of the organ). Utbah said: I want a clearer answer than this. The soothsayer said: A grain of wheat in the urethra of a colt. Utbah said: You have spoken the truth; now look into the matter of these women. So he began to approach each woman, strike her shoulder and say: Stand up, until he came near Hind, struck her shoulder and said: Stand up, you are neither a wanton woman nor an adulteress, and you will give birth to a boy who will be called Mu'awiyah. At this al-Fakih rose and took her by the hand, but Hind pulled her hand from his hand and said: Keep away; by Allah, I will strive that this be from someone other than you. So Abu Sufyan married her, and Mu'awiyah was born to them.

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, there was no household on the face of the earth whose humiliation by Allah was dearer to me than your household; and today there is no household on the face of the earth whose honouring by Allah is dearer to me than your household. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it will be even more (it will increase)." Ma'mar said: That is, it will increase further. Then she said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man; is there any sin on me if I hold back something from his wealth for his dependants without his permission? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm on you in spending on them according to what is reasonable."
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyidah Hind, the mother of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with her), came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Abu Sufyan is a stingy man, and he does not give (enough) to me and my children except what I take from him without his knowing; is there any sin on me in that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take what suffices you and your sons, according to what is reasonable."
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her); she said: Sayyidah Hind, the mother of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man; is there any sin on me if I take something from his wealth secretly? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You and your sons, take what suffices you, according to what is reasonable."
