Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah (may Allah be pleased with her). She was known as Umm al-Masakin (Mother of the Poor); she was given this name because she fed the poor so much. She was from Banu Hilal bin Amir bin Sa'sa'ah, and she passed away during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); her time with him (peace and blessings be upon him) was very short.

A woman of Banu Asad said: One day I was with Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were preparing cloth for her with red ochre. While we were doing so, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to us, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the red ochre dye, he went back. When Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) saw this, she understood that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked what she had done, so she took water, washed her clothes and covered every trace of red. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came back, looked in and did not see anything, so he came in.

Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), Umm al-Masakin (the Mother of the Poor). Before him (peace and blessings be upon him) she had been married to al-Husayn or to al-Tufayl bin al-Harith. She died in Madinah and was the first of his (peace and blessings be upon him) wives to die.
