Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from her husband Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There is no one among the Muslims who is struck by a calamity and says: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). O Allah, I seek the reward for my calamity with You. O Allah, give me in exchange for it something better than it', except that Allah gives him in exchange for it something better than it." Then, when Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) died, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). O Allah, I seek the reward for my calamity concerning Abu Salamah with You. O Allah, give me in exchange for him someone better than him. (She said:) Then I began saying to myself: Who could be better than Abu Salamah? Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and proposed marriage to me. I said: I am a woman with children, I am jealous, and I am advanced in age. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for age, I am older than you. As for jealousy, I will pray to Allah to remove it from you. As for the children, they are the responsibility of Allah and His Messenger." So Umar bin Abi Salamah gave the order and married me to him (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me a proposal of marriage, I said: There are three things in me: I am advanced in age, I am a woman with children, and I am a woman of intense jealousy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for age, I am older than you. As for the children, they are the responsibility of Allah and His Messenger. And as for jealousy, I will pray to Allah to remove it from you." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married her. Then, when he went in to her, he said: "You and your family are honoured in my sight. I have not given seven days to any of my wives; but if I give you seven days, I will give seven days to each of my wives as well."
