It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to narrate the story of Umm Zar' and her companions. He said: "Eleven women gathered and pledged and agreed among themselves that each would describe the true state of her husband and would not lie in anything.

The first said: My husband is feeble and useless; every defect is found in him. He may wound you, or break one of your limbs, or do both to you.

The second said: My husband is like the meat of a lean camel (placed) on a rugged mountain; it is neither fat enough to be climbed for, nor easy enough to be carried down.

The third said: My husband is the tall (useless) one; if I keep silent he divorces me, and if I speak he keeps me hanging (without a decision).

The fourth said: My husband, when he drinks, drinks everything up, and when he sleeps, he wraps himself up (in his blanket), and he does not put his hand in to learn of my sorrow.

The fifth said: My husband: I cannot relate his whole story; I fear I would not be able to describe it completely. Urwah said: These five were complaining (about their husbands).

The sixth said: My husband is like the night of Tihamah: neither hot, nor cold, nor any fear.

The seventh said: My husband, when he enters the house, is like a gentle cheetah, and when he goes out he becomes a lion, and he does not ask about what he left (in the house).

The eighth said: My husband's scent is the scent of zarnab, and his touch is (soft) like that of a rabbit; I keep him in hand while he overcomes (other) people.

The ninth said: My husband is of the lofty pillar, of the long sword-belt (that is, tall and of high rank), of abundant ashes (that is, very hospitable), and his house is near the place of assembly.

The tenth said: My husband is Abu Malik, and what is Abu Malik! He owns camels that often go out to graze and seldom stay kneeling at home; when they hear the sound of the lute, they are certain that they are to be slaughtered (for the guests).

The eleventh said: My husband is Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'! He weighed down my ears with ornaments, filled my upper arms with fat, and pleased me so much that I swelled with joy. The son of Abu Zar', and what is the son of Abu Zar'! His sleeping place is like a (slender) stripped palm stalk, and the foreleg of a young kid satisfies his hunger. The daughter of Abu Zar', and what is the daughter of Abu Zar'! She fills her garment, is slender in her wrap, the best of the women (of her family), a cause of envy to her co-wives, obedient to her father and obedient to her mother. The maidservant of Abu Zar', and what is the maidservant of Abu Zar'! She does not spread our talk (here and there), does not waste our provisions, and does not fill our house with rubbish.

Abu Zar' came to me when I was in hardship, and he took me in, and he brought me to people who had the neighing of horses, the groaning of camels, and the bustle of threshing and cleaning grain. With him I sleep and rise late at my ease, and I drink and am fully content, and whatever I say I am not rebuked for it.

Once Abu Zar' went out from my home (at a time) when the milk skins were being churned, and his eye fell on a woman who had two sons like cheetahs (in agility), playing beneath her with two pomegranates. Abu Zar' married her and divorced me. After him I married a young, noble man, who rode a swift horse and carried a Khatti spear. He brought many cattle back from the pasture for my daughter, and gave me a pair of every kind of grazing animal, and said: Eat, and feed your family too. Yet if I gathered everything I received from him (my new husband) and put it in the smallest of Abu Zar's vessels, it would not fill it."

Sayyidah Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'."

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father, from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Uqbah bin Khalid said: Hisham bin Urwah said: Yazid bin Ruman narrated to me from Urwah, from Sayyidah Aishah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the Days of Ignorance, eleven women gathered together, and they made a pact among themselves that they would speak truthfully to one another and would not conceal anything about their husbands.

The first said: My husband is like the meat of a lean camel (placed) on the top of a mountain; (the mountain) is neither easy to climb, nor is (the meat) fat enough to be carried away.

The second said: I will not spread the news of my husband; I fear that I would not be able to describe him completely. If I were to mention him, I would have to recount all his faults, small and large.

The third said: My husband is tall (and useless); if I speak, he divorces me, and if I keep silent, he leaves me hanging (without a decision).

The fourth said: My husband, if he eats, he gathers up everything; if he drinks, he drinks up (everything); if he lies down, he wraps himself up (in a blanket); and he does not put his hand (on my body) to learn my condition.

The fifth said: My husband is feeble and useless; every fault is in him. He may wound you, or break (one of your limbs), or do both together.

The sixth said: My husband is like the night of Tihamah: neither hot, nor cold, nor any fear.

The seventh said: My husband, when he enters the house, is like a gentle cheetah, and when he goes out, he becomes a lion, and he does not ask about what he left (in the house).

The eighth said: My husband's touch is (soft) like a rabbit's, and his scent is the scent of zarnab, and I keep him under my control while he prevails over (other) people.

The ninth said: My husband is one with a lofty pillar, a long sword-belt, abundant ashes, and his house is near the place of assembly.

The tenth said: My husband is Malik, yes, he is Malik, and what is Malik! Malik is even better than that. He has camels that seldom go out to graze and mostly stay kneeling at home; when they hear the sound of the lute, they are certain that they are about to be slaughtered.

The eleventh said: My husband is Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'! He weighed down my ears with ornaments, and filled my upper arms with fat, and he made me happy, so my heart became happy too. He had found me in a family with a few sheep (in a poor condition), then he brought me into an environment of neighing horses, groaning camels, and those who thresh the crops and clean the grain. With him, whatever I say, I am not rebuked for it; I sleep and wake late at leisure; and I drink and am fully satisfied. The mother of Abu Zar', and what is the mother of Abu Zar'! Her bags of provisions are full and heavy, and her house is spacious. The son of Abu Zar', and what is the son of Abu Zar'! His sleeping place is like a (thin) palm stalk drawn out, and the foreleg of a young kid satisfies him. The daughter of Abu Zar', and what is the daughter of Abu Zar'! Obedient to her father, obedient to her mother, filling her garment, and a cause of envy for her co-wife. The maidservant of Abu Zar', and what is the maidservant of Abu Zar'! She does not spread our talk (here and there), nor does she waste and scatter our provisions, nor does she fill our house with rubbish.

One day Abu Zar' went out while the milk skins were being churned, and he passed by a woman who had two sons like cheetahs (in agility), playing with two pomegranates beneath her waist. He divorced me and married her. After him, I married a dignified man who rode a swift horse, carried a Khatti spear, brought many cattle back from pasture for me, and gave me a pair of every kind of grazing animal, and said: O Umm Zar'! Eat, and feed your family as well. Yet if I were to gather everything he gave me, it would not fill even the smallest of Abu Zar's vessels."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'."

Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb narrates through Rayhan bin Sa'id, from Abbad bin Mansur, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Who were Abu Zar' and Umm Zar'? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten women gathered and swore that they would speak truthfully about their husbands.

One said: I will not tell the news of my husband; I fear that I would not be able to describe him completely.

Another said: He is tall (and useless); if I keep silent, he leaves me hanging, and if I speak, he divorces me.

The third said: He is like the meat of a lean camel (placed) on a mountain; it is neither fat enough that one would climb up to it, nor soft enough that it could be brought down and carried away.

The fourth said: He, if he eats, gathers up everything, and if he drinks, drinks up everything, and he does not put his hand inside to learn (my) grief.

The fifth said: He is like the night of Tihamah: neither hot, nor cold, nor any fear.

The sixth said: He, when he enters the house, is like a gentle cheetah, and when he goes out, he becomes a lion, and he does not ask about what he left behind.

The seventh said: His scent is the scent of zarnab, and his touch is (soft) like a rabbit's, and I keep him under my control while he prevails over (other) people.

The eighth said: He is one with a long fire-stick, a lofty pillar, abundant ashes, and his house is near the place of assembly.

The ninth said: He is Malik, and what is Malik! He has camels that mostly go out to graze and seldom stay kneeling at home; when they hear the sound of the flute, they are certain that they are about to be slaughtered.

The tenth said: He is Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'! He is the owner of livestock and crops. He made me feel at ease, so I became at ease; he filled my ears with ornaments and my upper arms with fat, and he made me happy, so my heart became happy too. With him, I sleep and wake late at leisure, I drink and am fully satisfied, and whatever I say, I am not rebuked for it. He took me from a household that was in hardship, and brought me into an environment of neighing horses, groaning camels, and those who thresh the crops and clean the grain. The son of Abu Zar', and what is the son of Abu Zar'! His sleeping manner is like a (thin) palm stalk, and (food) the size of a small stick suffices him. The daughter of Abu Zar', and what is the daughter of Abu Zar'! Filling her garment, wrapping her shawl around herself, the coolness of the eyes of her father and mother, an adornment for her family, and deserving of no blame. The maidservant of Abu Zar', and what is the maidservant of Abu Zar'! She does not waste our talk by spreading it, nor does she waste our provisions by scattering them.

Then one day Abu Zar' went out from my presence while the milk skins were being churned, and he saw a woman with her two sons like cheetahs, playing with two pomegranates beneath her. He married her and divorced me. After him, I married a dignified young man; he proved generous, carried a Khatti spear, drove in many cattle, and gave me a pair of every kind of grazing animal, and said: O Umm Zar'! Feed your family. I said: If all of this were gathered in even one of Abu Zar's vessels, it would not fill it."

Sayyidah Aishah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! You are better to me than Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'.

Urwah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: In the Days of Ignorance I boasted of my father's wealth, which amounted to about one million uqiyah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Be quiet, O Aishah! I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to relate that eleven women gathered in the Days of Ignorance and made a pact among themselves that each woman would tell about her husband and would not lie.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: (My husband) is like the night of Tihamah: neither hot, nor cold, nor any fear.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: (My husband's) scent is the scent of zarnab, and his touch is (soft) like a rabbit's, and I keep him under my control while he prevails over (other) people.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: By Allah! All I know is that he is one with a lofty pillar, a long sword-belt, abundant ashes, and his house is near the place of assembly.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: I married Malik, and what is Malik! He has camels that mostly go out to graze and seldom stay kneeling at home; when they hear the sound of the lute, they are certain that they are about to be slaughtered.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: My husband, I mention him; if I were to mention him, I would have to recount all his faults, small and large; I fear that I would not be able to describe him completely.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: By Allah! All I know is that when he enters the house, he is like a gentle cheetah, and when he goes out, he becomes a lion, and he does not ask about what he left behind.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: (My husband) is like the meat of a lean camel (placed) on a mountain; it is neither fat enough to be brought down, nor soft enough that one would climb up to it.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: By Allah! All I know is that if he eats, he gathers up everything; if he drinks, he drinks up everything; if he slaughters, he picks a lean animal; if he sleeps, he wraps himself up (in a blanket); and he does not put his hand inside to learn my grief.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: I married a tall (useless) man; if I speak, he divorces me, and if I keep silent, he leaves me hanging.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: He is feeble and useless; every illness has a cure; he may wound you, or break one of your limbs, or do both together.

It was said: You tell, O so-and-so! She said: I married Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'! He weighed down my ears with ornaments, and filled my upper arms with fat, and he made me happy, so I became happy too. He had found me in a poor family with a few sheep, then he brought me into an environment bustling with neighing horses, groaning camels, and those who thresh the crops and clean the grain. So with him I sleep and wake late at leisure, I drink and am fully satisfied, and whatever I say, I am not rebuked for it. The son of Abu Zar', and what is the son of Abu Zar'! His sleeping manner is like a (thin) palm stalk, and the foreleg of a young kid satisfies him. The daughter of Abu Zar', and what is the daughter of Abu Zar'! Filling her wrap, the adornment of her father, the adornment of her mother, and the best (example) for her co-wife. The maidservant of Abu Zar', and what is the maidservant of Abu Zar'! She does not waste our talk by spreading it, nor does she waste our provisions by scattering them.

One day Abu Zar' went out from my presence while the milk skins were being churned, and his eyes fell upon a woman who had two sons (agile) like falcons, so Abu Zar' married her and divorced me. I sought a replacement (for him), and every replacement has some deficiency. I married a dignified young man who rode a swift horse, carried a Khatti spear, gave me many cattle, and gave me a pair of every kind of grazing animal, and said: O Umm Zar'! Take provisions and feed your family. I gathered all of it, yet it did not fill even the smallest of Abu Zar's vessels.

Sayyidah Aishah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Rather, you are better than Abu Zar'.

Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi narrates through Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and said: "O Aishah! I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was a town among the towns of Yemen in which some of the clans of Yemen lived, and in it were eleven women. They went out to a gathering of theirs, and some of them said to others: Come, let us describe something of our husbands truthfully and not lie. It was said to the first: Speak, so she spoke" — then (the narrator) related the whole hadith. The second, who was Amrah bint Abd Amr, (also spoke). It was said to the third: Speak; she was Hubba bint Ka'b. It was said to the fourth: Speak; she was Hudad bint Abi Harumah. It was said to the fifth: Speak; she was Kabshah. It was said to the sixth: Speak; she was Hind. It was said to the seventh: Speak; she was Hubba bint Alqamah. It was said to the eighth: Speak; she was Asma' bint Abd. It was said to the ninth: Speak, and her name was not mentioned. It was said to the tenth: Speak; she was Kubayshah bint al-Arqam. It was said to Umm Zar': Speak; she was the daughter of al-Ukayhil bin Sa'idah, and she said: Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'?" — then (the narrator) related the whole hadith.
