It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to narrate the story of Umm Zar' and her companions. He said: "Eleven women gathered and pledged and agreed among themselves that each would describe the true state of her husband and would not lie in anything.
The first said: My husband is feeble and useless; every defect is found in him. He may wound you, or break one of your limbs, or do both to you.
The second said: My husband is like the meat of a lean camel (placed) on a rugged mountain; it is neither fat enough to be climbed for, nor easy enough to be carried down.
The third said: My husband is the tall (useless) one; if I keep silent he divorces me, and if I speak he keeps me hanging (without a decision).
The fourth said: My husband, when he drinks, drinks everything up, and when he sleeps, he wraps himself up (in his blanket), and he does not put his hand in to learn of my sorrow.
The fifth said: My husband: I cannot relate his whole story; I fear I would not be able to describe it completely. Urwah said: These five were complaining (about their husbands).
The sixth said: My husband is like the night of Tihamah: neither hot, nor cold, nor any fear.
The seventh said: My husband, when he enters the house, is like a gentle cheetah, and when he goes out he becomes a lion, and he does not ask about what he left (in the house).
The eighth said: My husband's scent is the scent of zarnab, and his touch is (soft) like that of a rabbit; I keep him in hand while he overcomes (other) people.
The ninth said: My husband is of the lofty pillar, of the long sword-belt (that is, tall and of high rank), of abundant ashes (that is, very hospitable), and his house is near the place of assembly.
The tenth said: My husband is Abu Malik, and what is Abu Malik! He owns camels that often go out to graze and seldom stay kneeling at home; when they hear the sound of the lute, they are certain that they are to be slaughtered (for the guests).
The eleventh said: My husband is Abu Zar', and what is Abu Zar'! He weighed down my ears with ornaments, filled my upper arms with fat, and pleased me so much that I swelled with joy. The son of Abu Zar', and what is the son of Abu Zar'! His sleeping place is like a (slender) stripped palm stalk, and the foreleg of a young kid satisfies his hunger. The daughter of Abu Zar', and what is the daughter of Abu Zar'! She fills her garment, is slender in her wrap, the best of the women (of her family), a cause of envy to her co-wives, obedient to her father and obedient to her mother. The maidservant of Abu Zar', and what is the maidservant of Abu Zar'! She does not spread our talk (here and there), does not waste our provisions, and does not fill our house with rubbish.
Abu Zar' came to me when I was in hardship, and he took me in, and he brought me to people who had the neighing of horses, the groaning of camels, and the bustle of threshing and cleaning grain. With him I sleep and rise late at my ease, and I drink and am fully content, and whatever I say I am not rebuked for it.
Once Abu Zar' went out from my home (at a time) when the milk skins were being churned, and his eye fell on a woman who had two sons like cheetahs (in agility), playing beneath her with two pomegranates. Abu Zar' married her and divorced me. After him I married a young, noble man, who rode a swift horse and carried a Khatti spear. He brought many cattle back from the pasture for my daughter, and gave me a pair of every kind of grazing animal, and said: Eat, and feed your family too. Yet if I gathered everything I received from him (my new husband) and put it in the smallest of Abu Zar's vessels, it would not fill it."
Sayyidah Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "I was to you as Abu Zar' was to Umm Zar'."
