It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to Amr bin Sa'id, who was sending troops to Makkah: O Amir, permit me to tell you something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared on the day after the Conquest of Makkah. My ears heard it, my heart retained it, and my eyes saw him when he (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah, then said: "Indeed, Allah has made Makkah sacred; people did not make it sacred. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it, nor to cut down any of its trees. If anyone takes the fighting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (here) as a licence, then say to him: Allah gave permission to His Messenger and did not give permission to you. And it was permitted to me only for an hour of a day, and today its sanctity has returned just as it was yesterday. So let the one who is present convey this to the one who is absent." Then Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: What did Amr say to you in reply? He said: He said: O Abu Shurayh, I know better about this than you. The Sanctuary gives no refuge to a disobedient one, nor to a fugitive guilty of bloodshed, nor to a fugitive guilty of theft.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Amr bin Sa'id bin al-As dispatched an army and sent it to Makkah to fight Ibn al-Zubayr, Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and spoke to him, and informed him of what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went out to the gathering place of his people and sat in it. So I (the narrator) got up, went to him and sat with him, and he told his people the same thing he had told Amr bin Sa'id. Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O you, we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah. On the day after the Conquest, the tribe of Khuza'ah attacked a man from the tribe of Hudhayl and killed him, while he was a polytheist. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "O people, Allah made Makkah sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it is one of the sanctities of Allah until the Day of Resurrection. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it, nor to cut down any of its trees. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me, and it was made lawful for me only for this hour, out of anger against its people; then its sanctity returned as it was yesterday. So let the one among you who is present convey this to the one who is absent. Whoever says to you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought in it, then say: Allah made it lawful for His Messenger and did not make it lawful for you. O people of Khuza'ah, withhold your hands from killing, for it has become too grave a matter. You have killed a man; I will certainly pay his blood money. Whoever kills after this, his heirs have the choice of the better of two options: if they wish, they may take retaliation from the killer, and if they wish, they may take the blood money." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money of the man from Hudhayl who had been killed. (This is the wording of the narration of al-Nufayli.)

Then it is sacred as it was before. O Khuza'ah, you have killed this slain man from Hudhayl, and by Allah, I am the one who will pay his blood money. So whoever kills anyone here after this, his heirs have the choice between two options: if they wish, they may kill, and if they wish, they may take the blood money."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said: "Rejoice! Do you not bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" We said: Certainly. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, this Qur'an is a rope, one end of which is in the Hand of Allah and the other end in your hands. So hold fast to it, for after it you will never go astray and you will never perish."
