It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Amr bin Sa'id bin al-As dispatched an army and sent it to Makkah to fight Ibn al-Zubayr, Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and spoke to him, and informed him of what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he went out to the gathering place of his people and sat in it. So I (the narrator) got up, went to him and sat with him, and he told his people the same thing he had told Amr bin Sa'id. Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O you, we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah. On the day after the Conquest, the tribe of Khuza'ah attacked a man from the tribe of Hudhayl and killed him, while he was a polytheist. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "O people, Allah made Makkah sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it is one of the sanctities of Allah until the Day of Resurrection. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it, nor to cut down any of its trees. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me, and it was made lawful for me only for this hour, out of anger against its people; then its sanctity returned as it was yesterday. So let the one among you who is present convey this to the one who is absent. Whoever says to you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought in it, then say: Allah made it lawful for His Messenger and did not make it lawful for you. O people of Khuza'ah, withhold your hands from killing, for it has become too grave a matter. You have killed a man; I will certainly pay his blood money. Whoever kills after this, his heirs have the choice of the better of two options: if they wish, they may take retaliation from the killer, and if they wish, they may take the blood money." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money of the man from Hudhayl who had been killed. (This is the wording of the narration of al-Nufayli.)
