Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) when a horse was presented before me. A man said: Mount me on this (that is, give it to me). He said: I would prefer to mount on it a young man who has ridden horses on his own merit, rather than mount you on it. At this the man became angry and said: By Allah, I am a better horseman than you and than your father. When he said that to the successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I became angry. I went up to him, seized him by the head and dragged him on his nose, so that his nose became like the spout of a water skin. The Ansar wanted to take retaliation from me for him. When this reached Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "I have learned that some people think I will let them take retaliation from al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah. Yet it would be far easier for me to expel them from their homes than to let them take retaliation from Allah's guardians who restrain His servants (from wrongdoing)."

Al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Hold back your hand, or else it will not return to you - and al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) had a sword hanging from his shoulder. Urwah said: O Messenger of Allah, who is this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is your nephew, al-Mughirah." Urwah said: O treacherous one! I have still not washed my head of your treachery.
