Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl, while Sayyidah Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to him. When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard of this, she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Your people are saying that you do not become angry on behalf of your daughters, and here is Ali about to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl. Al-Miswar said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) recite the testimony (tashahhud), then he said: "Amma ba'd (To proceed): I gave my daughter in marriage to Abu al-As bin al-Rabi', and he spoke to me and was truthful to me. Fatimah bint Muhammad is a part of me, and I dislike that you should put her to trial. By Allah! The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah can never be together with one man." The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) abandoned that proposal.

Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when he came to Madinah from Yazid bin Mu'awiyah after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said: Do you have any need which you would command me to fulfil? I said: No. He said: Will you give me the sword of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? For I fear that these people will overpower you for it; and by Allah! if you give it to me, no one will ever get to it until my soul departs. (Then he said:) Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl while Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was his wife, and I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) address the people about it on this pulpit of his - and on that day I had reached puberty - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fatimah is from me, and I fear that she will be put to trial in her religion." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned his son-in-law from Banu Abd Shams and praised Abu al-As for his conduct as his son-in-law, saying: "He was truthful to me, and he made me a promise and fulfilled it. I do not make anything lawful unlawful, nor anything unlawful lawful; but by Allah! the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be brought together."
