Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his Companions and said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has sent me as a mercy to all people, so convey this message on my behalf, may Allah have mercy on you. And do not differ as the disciples differed concerning Isa (peace be upon him), even though he called them to the same thing to which I am calling you. Those whose place was near accepted and submitted, and those whose place was far disliked it. So Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) complained of this to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and when morning came each one of them was speaking the language of the people to whom he had been sent. Then Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) said to them: This is a matter which Allah has decreed for you, so go and do it." The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Messenger of Allah! We will convey this message on your behalf, so send us wherever you wish. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) to Chosroes; he sent Salit bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) to Hawdhah bin Ali, the ruler of al-Yamamah; he sent al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) to al-Mundhir bin Sawa, the ruler of Hajar; he sent Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) to the two kings of Oman, Jayfar and Abbad, the sons of al-Julanda; he sent Sayyiduna Dihyah al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him) to Caesar; he sent Shuja' bin Wahb al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) to al-Mundhir bin al-Harith bin Abi Shimr al-Ghassani; and he sent Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Negus. All of them returned before the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) except al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him), for at the time of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) he was in Bahrain.

Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Marwan bin al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate, each of them confirming the other, that at the time of Hudaybiyah the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with between thirteen hundred and nineteen hundred of his Companions. When they reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) garlanded the sacrificial animals and marked them, then entered the state of ihram for Umrah, and he sent ahead of him a scout from Khuza'ah to bring him news of Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on until, when he reached Ghadir al-Ashtat, near Usfan, his Khuza'i scout came to him and said: I have left Ka'b bin Lu'ayy and Amir bin Lu'ayy having gathered the Ahabish against you, and they have assembled forces against you; they will fight you and bar you from the Sacred House. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Advise me. Is it your view that I should turn towards the offspring and families of those who have helped them and make them our target? If they stay put, they will stay put having suffered loss and been plundered; and if they come, it will be a neck that Allah will cut off. Or is it your view that we should make for the House, and whoever bars us from it, we fight him?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah and His Messenger know best, O Prophet of Allah! We have only come to perform Umrah; we have not come to fight anyone. But whoever comes between us and the House, we will fight him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then move on." So they moved on, until, when they were on the way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Khalid bin al-Walid is at al-Ghamim with the cavalry of Quraysh, watching our path, so take the road to the right." By Allah! Khalid did not become aware of them until he saw the dust of the army, and he went galloping off to warn Quraysh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on until, when he reached the mountain pass from which one descends towards Makkah, his (peace and blessings be upon him) mount knelt down. The people said: Move on, move on! The people said: Al-Qaswa' has become stubborn, she has become stubborn! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Al-Qaswa' has not become stubborn, nor is that her nature; rather, she has been held back by the One who held back the elephant." Then he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they will not ask me for any arrangement in which they honour the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) urged her on, and she rose up and carried him (peace and blessings be upon him) away from them, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) halted at the far end of Hudaybiyah beside a well with little water, from which the people drew it a little at a time. Before long the people had drained it, and they complained of thirst to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) drew an arrow from his quiver, then commanded them to place it in that well. The narrator said: By Allah! It kept welling up with water for them until they all went away with their thirst quenched. While they were in that state, Budayl bin Warqa' al-Khuza'i came to them with some people of his tribe, Khuza'ah - and these were the well-wishers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) among the people of Tihamah - and he said: I saw Ka'b bin Lu'ayy and Amir bin Lu'ayy encamped at the edges of the waters of Hudaybiyah, and they have their milch camels with them; they will fight you and bar you from the House. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We have not come to fight anyone; rather, we have come to perform Umrah. War has weakened Quraysh and harmed them. If they wish, I will make a truce with them for a period, and they should not stand between me and the people (whom I call). Then, if I prevail, if they wish to enter what the people have entered, they may do so; otherwise (in that period) they will have gained rest and strength. But if they refuse, then by the One in whose hand is my soul, I will certainly fight them over this cause of mine until my neck is severed, or Allah carries out His command." Budayl said: I will convey to them what you say. So he went until he reached Quraysh and said: We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something; if you wish, we will put it before you. The foolish among them said: We have no need for you to tell us anything from him. And the sensible among them said: Tell us what you heard him say. He said: I heard him say such and such. So he told them what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. Then Urwah bin Mas'ud al-Thaqafi stood up and said: O my people! Are you not (as my) children? They said: Of course. He said: Am I not your father? They said: Of course. He said: Do you suspect me of anything? They said: No. He said: Do you not know that I called upon the people of Ukaz for help, and when they failed to support me, I came to you with my family, my children and all who obeyed me? They said: Of course. He said: Then this man has put before you a sound and good proposal; accept it, and let me go to him. They said: Go. So he came and began speaking to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him much the same as he had said to Budayl. At this Urwah said: O Muhammad! What do you think: if you uproot your own people, have you heard of anyone among the Arabs before you who destroyed his own kin? And if it turns out the other way, then by Allah, I see faces, and I see a mixed rabble of people who are likely to flee and abandon you. At this Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go suck the private parts of al-Lat (the idol)! Would we flee and abandon him? Urwah asked: Who is this? The people said: It is Abu Bakr. He said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not for a favour you once did me which I have not repaid, I would have answered you. The narrator said: Then he began speaking to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and whenever he spoke he would take hold of his (peace and blessings be upon him) beard. Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing at the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), wearing a helmet and holding a sword, and whenever Urwah reached his hand towards the beard of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would strike his hand with the scabbard of the sword and say: Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Urwah raised his head and asked: Who is this? It was said: This is al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah. He said: O treacherous one! Am I not still bearing the consequences of your treachery? - Al-Mughirah had, in the Jahiliyyah, kept company with some people, then killed them and taken their wealth, and then came and became Muslim, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for the Islam, I accept it; but as for the wealth, I have nothing to do with it." - Then Urwah began watching the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closely with his own eyes, and he said: By Allah! Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spat, it fell into the hand of one of them, and he would rub it on his face and body; when he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a command, they rushed to carry it out; when he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, they almost fought over the water of his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution; when he (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke, they lowered their voices; and out of reverence for him (peace and blessings be upon him) they did not look at him (peace and blessings be upon him) with a fixed gaze. Then Urwah went back to his companions and said: O my people! By Allah! I have been to the courts of kings; I have been to the courts of Caesar, Chosroes and the Negus. By Allah! I have never seen a king whose companions revere him as much as the companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) revere him. By Allah! Whenever he spat, it fell into the palm of one of them, and he would rub it on his face and body; when he gave them a command, they rushed to carry it out; when he performed ablution, they almost fought over the water of his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution; when he spoke, they lowered their voices; and out of reverence for him they did not look at him with a fixed gaze. And indeed this man has put before you a sound proposal, so accept it. Then a man from Banu Kinanah said: Let me go to him. They said: Go. When he came into view of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is so-and-so, and he is from a people who revere the sacrificial animals, so send them towards him." So they were sent towards him, and the people came before him reciting the Talbiyah. When he saw this, he said: Subhan Allah! It is not right that these people should be barred from the House. The narrator said: When he went back to his companions, he said: I saw the sacrificial animals with collars around their necks and marks on them, and I do not think they should be barred from the House. Then a man among them named Mikraz bin Hafs said: Let me go to him. They said: Go. When he came into view of them, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Mikraz bin Hafs, and he is a wicked man." He began speaking to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and while he was doing so, Suhayl bin Amr came. He said: Come, let me write a document between us and you. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called the scribe, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write: Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)." Suhayl said: As for al-Rahman, by Allah, I do not know what it is; rather, write: Bismika Allahumma (In Your name, O Allah), as you used to write before. The Muslims said: By Allah! He will write nothing but Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write: Bismika Allahumma." Then he said: "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has agreed to in making peace." Suhayl said: By Allah! Had we known that you are the Messenger of Allah, we would neither have barred you from the House nor fought you; rather, write: Muhammad bin Abdullah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I am the Messenger of Allah even if you deny me. Write: Muhammad bin Abdullah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On condition that you leave the way clear between us and the House so that we may perform tawaf around it." Suhayl said: By Allah! The Arabs shall not say that we were pressured and forced into it; but you may have it next year. So he wrote that. Suhayl further said: And on condition that no man from us comes to you, even if he is on your religion, but that you will return him to us. The Muslims said: Subhan Allah! How can he be returned to the idolaters when he has come as a Muslim? While they were in that state, Abu Jandal, the son of Suhayl bin Amr, came stumbling in his chains; he had escaped from the lower part of Makkah and thrown himself among the Muslims. Suhayl said: O Muhammad! This is the first one regarding whom I stipulate with you that you return him to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We have not yet completed the document." Suhayl said: By Allah! Then I will never make peace with you on anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then let him go for my sake." He said: I will not let him go for your sake. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, do so." He said: I will not do it. Mikraz said: Yes, we have let him go for your sake. Abu Jandal said: O assembly of Muslims! Shall I be returned to the idolaters when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see the state I am in? - and he had been severely tortured in the way of Allah. Then Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Since I became Muslim I have never had any doubt except on that day. So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Are you not truly the Prophet of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of course." I said: Are we not upon the truth and our enemy upon falsehood? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of course." I said: Then why should we accept this humiliation in the matter of our religion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the Messenger of Allah, and I do not disobey Him, and He is my Helper." I said: Did you not tell us that we would come to the House and perform tawaf around it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of course; but did I tell you that you would come this very year?" I said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you will surely come to it and perform tawaf around it." The narrator said: Then I came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr! Is he not truly the Prophet of Allah? He said: Of course. I said: Are we not upon the truth and our enemy upon falsehood? He said: Of course. I said: Then why should we accept this humiliation in the matter of our religion? He said: O man! He is the Messenger of Allah; he does not disobey his Lord, and He is his Helper. So hold fast to his stirrup until you die, for by Allah! he is upon the truth. I said: Did he not tell us that we would come to the House and perform tawaf around it? He said: Of course; but did he tell you that you would come this very year? I said: No. He said: Then you will surely come to it and perform tawaf around it. The narrator said: When the matter of the document was completed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Get up, offer your sacrifices, then shave your heads." The narrator said: By Allah! Not one man among them stood up, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said it three times. When none of them rose, he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself got up and went in to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and told her of the situation he had met with from the people. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Prophet of Allah! Is this what you want? Go out, and do not speak a single word to any of them until you have slaughtered your sacrificial animal, and call your barber so that he shaves your head. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went out and did not speak to any of them until he had done all this: he slaughtered his sacrificial animal and called his barber, who shaved his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. When they saw that, they stood up and began offering their sacrifices and shaving one another's heads, until, out of grief, they almost killed one another. Then some believing women came, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants" [Al-Mumtahanah: 10] up to "the ties of disbelieving women" [Al-Mumtahanah: 10]. On that day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) divorced two wives who had been married to him while in a state of idolatry; one of them was then married by Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), and the other by Safwan bin Umayyah. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Madinah, and Abu Basir - a man of Quraysh - came, being a Muslim. They sent two men in search of him and said: Remember the covenant you made with us. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) handed him over to the two men. They took him out until, when they reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, they dismounted to eat some of their dates. Abu Basir said to one of the two men: By Allah! O so-and-so, I see that this sword of yours is excellent. The other drew it from its scabbard and said: Yes, by Allah, it is excellent; I have tried it again and again. Abu Basir said: Show it to me, let me look at it. He gave it to him, and he struck him with it until he lay dead. The other fled until he reached Madinah and entered the mosque running. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "This man has seen something terrifying." When he reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: By Allah! My companion has been killed, and I am going to be killed too. Just then Abu Basir arrived and said: O Prophet of Allah! By Allah! Allah has fulfilled your obligation: you returned me to them, and then Allah saved me from them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to his mother! He is a kindler of war, if only he had someone with him." When he heard this, he understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would return him to them, so he went out and made for the seashore. The narrator said: Abu Jandal bin Suhayl also escaped from them and joined Abu Basir, and thereafter any man of Quraysh who came out having become Muslim would join Abu Basir, until a band of them had gathered. The narrator said: By Allah! Whenever they heard of a caravan of Quraysh setting out for Syria, they would intercept it, kill them and take their wealth. So Quraysh sent word to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), imploring him by Allah and by the ties of kinship to call them back, and saying: Whoever comes to you will be safe. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for them. Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them within Makkah" [Al-Fath: 24] up to "the zealotry of the Jahiliyyah" [Al-Fath: 26]. The zealotry of Quraysh was that they did not acknowledge that he was the Prophet of Allah, nor did they accept the writing of Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim, and they stood between him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the House and barred him from it.

Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Marwan bin al-Hakam narrate: In the year of Hudaybiyah the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out intending to visit the House, with no intention of fighting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) drove seventy camels with him for sacrifice, and the people numbered seven hundred, so each camel was on behalf of ten men. Ibn Ishaq said: Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We, the people of Hudaybiyah, were fourteen hundred. Al-Zuhri said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, until, when he reached Usfan, Bishr bin Sufyan al-Ka'bi met him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Quraysh have learned of your journey, and they have come out with their milch camels, to the extent that it is being said that they have put on leopard skins. They have encamped at Dhu Tuwa, pledging to Allah that you will never enter it against them. And here is Khalid bin al-Walid among their cavalry; they have sent him ahead as far as Kura' al-Ghamim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Alas for Quraysh! War has devoured them. What harm would it have done them had they left me to deal with the rest of the Arabs? If they (the Arabs) had overcome me, that is what they wanted; and if Allah makes me prevail over them, they will enter Islam in full numbers; and if they do not do so, they will fight while they still have strength. So what does Quraysh think? By Allah! I will keep striving against them for that with which Allah has sent me, until Allah makes me prevail or this neck is severed." Then he said: "Who will take us out by a route other than the one they are on?"
The narrator then narrated the rest of the hadith in the same way as the narration of Ma'mar from al-Zuhri (as mentioned above).

Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Marwan bin al-Hakam narrate: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on the day of Hudaybiyah, had the treaty written with Suhayl bin Amr on the terms of the truce period, one of the conditions Suhayl bin Amr imposed on him (peace and blessings be upon him) was that he said: No one from us shall come to you, even if he is upon your religion, but that you will return him to us, and you will leave us to deal with him. Suhayl refused to make peace with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on any other terms, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had the document written on that basis. So on that day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned Abu Jandal bin Suhayl to his father Suhayl bin Amr, and during that period every man who came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returned by him (peace and blessings be upon him), even if he was a Muslim. Then believing women began coming as emigrants. Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt (may Allah be pleased with her) was also among them; she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while she was being held back, and her family came and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to return her, until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning the believing women what He revealed.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) divided Khaybar, he divided it into eighty shares. The fighting men numbered one thousand eight hundred and the horses two hundred, with four hundred shares for the horsemen: each share being equivalent to eighteen hundred shares. Each hundred shares had a head: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was a head, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was a head, Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a head, Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was a head, and Asim bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) was a head; and the share of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Asim bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him).
