حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، أَنَا أَبِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ رَاشِدٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ، عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ خَطَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ، فأَوْعَدَ النِّكَاحَ، فَأَتَتْ فَاطِمَةُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ أَنْ لَا تَغْضَبَ لِبَنَاتِكَ، وَإِنَّ عَلِيًّا خَطَبَ بِنْتَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّمَا فَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي، وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ أَنْ تُفْتَتَنَ» وَذَكَرَ أَبَا الْعَاصِ بْنَ الرَّبِيعِ فَأَحْسَنَ عَلَيْهِ الثَّنَاءَ، وَقَالَ: «إِنَّهُ لَا يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَبَيْنَ ابْنَةِ عَدُوِّ اللهِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl and made a promise of marriage. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Your people say that you do not become angry on behalf of your daughters, and Ali has sent a proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah, then said: "Fatimah is but a part of me, and I dislike that she should be put to trial." He (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' and praised him very highly, and said: "The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be brought together (in one marriage)."
