Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when he came to Madinah from Yazid bin Mu'awiyah after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said: Do you have any need which you would command me to fulfil? I said: No. He said: Will you give me the sword of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? For I fear that these people will overpower you for it; and by Allah! if you give it to me, no one will ever get to it until my soul departs. (Then he said:) Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl while Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was his wife, and I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) address the people about it on this pulpit of his - and on that day I had reached puberty - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fatimah is from me, and I fear that she will be put to trial in her religion." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned his son-in-law from Banu Abd Shams and praised Abu al-As for his conduct as his son-in-law, saying: "He was truthful to me, and he made me a promise and fulfilled it. I do not make anything lawful unlawful, nor anything unlawful lawful; but by Allah! the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be brought together."
