Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) set out from Syria intending to go to Makkah. He stopped at a place between Makkah and Madinah called al-Abwa', where he looked into an ancient well and was afflicted with laqwah (facial palsy). He hurried on his journey until he reached Makkah. Then the chamberlain came to him and said: O Commander of the Believers, the people are at the door; I do not find a single face missing. He said: Then spread it (the seating) out for me. The narrator said: Then he called for a turban, wrapped it around his head and uncovered his face, then he came out, praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: "To proceed: if I am granted well-being, the righteous before me were also granted well-being, and I do not conceal that I hope to be among them. And if one of my limbs is ill, I cannot count my healthy ones. And if some of your elite are displeased with me, I have been kind to your common people. It is not for me to wish from Allah more than what He has given me. So may Allah have mercy on a man who prays for my well-being." At this, the voices rose up in supplication, and he began to weep. Marwan said to him: O Commander of the Believers, what makes you weep? He said: I have returned to what I had turned away from. My age has advanced, my bones have grown weak, the tears in my eyes have increased, and I have been struck in my best and most visible part. Were it not for my inclination towards Yazid, I would have seen my right course.

It said: Allah has sent me to you so that you inform Mu'awiyah al-Rahhal that he is among the people of Paradise. I said: Who is Mu'awiyah? It said: Ibn Abi Sufyan.
