Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The month of Ramadan is such that a person can give a ransom (fidyah) for it, feeding one poor person for each day of it. So feed a poor person on my behalf with a sa' (of grain) for each day. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was my partner (in business) in the Days of Ignorance, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was the best of partners: he neither disputed nor deceived.

Mujahid narrated that Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) grew so old that his age passed one hundred and sixty years, and he became too weak to fast, so food was given on his behalf (as a ransom).

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I used to lead my master, Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him), (to show him the way), and he would ask: Has the sun passed its zenith? When I said: Yes, he would pray Zuhr and say: This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray Asr while the sun was white and bright, and he used to pray Maghrib when the fasting person would be in doubt whether it was time to break the fast (that is, he prayed it very early), and he used to pray Fajr when the light had spread across the sky.

Abdullah bin Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: A year of famine drove al-Nabighah of Banu Ja'dah (may Allah be pleased with him) (to the city), so he came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) while he was sitting in Madinah, and recited these verses to him in the mosque: (1) When you became our ruler, you reminded us of al-Siddiq, Uthman and al-Faruq, and the destitute found relief. (2) You made people equal in what is right, so they became equal, and the pitch-dark (night) turned into morning. (3) Abu Layla has come to you, brought by a sturdy she-camel that cuts through the darkness of the night and crosses the deserts, (4) so that you may mend that side of him which the turns of the nights and a harsh age have shaken. Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Leave that, Abu Layla, for poetry is the weakest of your means with us. As for the choicest of our wealth, it is for the family of al-Zubayr, and as for its surplus, Banu Asad and Banu Tamim keep it from you. But you have two rights in the wealth of Allah: one right because you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and one right because you share with the people of Islam. Then he gave an order concerning him, and he was taken into Dar al-Na'am (the livestock enclosure), and seven young she-camels, a beast of burden and horses were ordered for him, and his mounts were loaded with wheat and dates. Then al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) began (out of severe hunger) to eat the raw grains hastily, so Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Alas for Abu Layla, how much hardship has reached him! Al-Nabighah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whenever Quraysh rule and act justly, are asked for mercy and show mercy, make a covenant and fulfil it, and make a promise and keep it, then I and all the prophets will go ahead (to the Pool on the Day of Resurrection) for the surging crowd."
