Ya'la bin Uqbah narrated: I woke up in the morning (in Ramadan) in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), so I came to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him. He said to me: "Do not fast." I said: Shall I not fast (today) and make it up later? He said: "No, rather do not fast." So I came to Marwan bin al-Hakam and asked him, and told him what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. He sent Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out for the Fajr prayer while water (of the ritual bath after janabah) was dripping from his head, and then he would fast that day." So he went back to Marwan and told him this, and Marwan said: Go to Abu Hurayrah and tell him. So he told him, and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did not hear this myself from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); rather, al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Ya'la bin Uqbah narrated: I became in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) in Madinah during the month of Ramadan, and woke up in the morning in that state. Then I came to Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about it. He said: "Do not fast." I said: Shall I fast today and later make up one day in its place? He said: "No, do not fast." So I came to Marwan bin al-Hakam, who was then the governor of Madinah, and mentioned this to him. He sent Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hakam to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in Ramadan in a state of janabah, not from a wet dream, and then continue his fast." So Abu Bakr came to Marwan and told him what Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had said. Marwan said to him: I adjure you to go to Abu Hurayrah and tell him what Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said. So I met him and told him what Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had said, and he said: "I did not hear this myself from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) told it to me." Ibn Awn said: I asked Raja' bin Haywah: Who narrated this hadith to you from Ya'la? He said: Ya'la himself narrated this hadith to me.

Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham narrated: I heard Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is overtaken by the morning (in a state of janabah), there is no fast for him." So my father and I went to Sayyidah Aishah and Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked them about this, and they told us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in the morning in a state of janabah, not from a wet dream, and then fast. He said: Then we went to Marwan and told him what the two of them had said and what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. Marwan said: I adjure you both to go to Abu Hurayrah and tell him this. He said: I met Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) at the door of the mosque, and my father said to him: The governor has adjured us to tell you about a matter. He said: What is it? My father told him, and the colour of Abu Hurayrah's (may Allah be pleased with him) face changed. Then he said: "That is what al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, and he knows better." Al-Zuhri said: Then he turned the conversation to something else.
