Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were with Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) when he delayed the Asr prayer, and Urwah said to him: Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud al-Ansari told me that Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) once delayed the prayer, meaning Asr, and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Listen, O Mughirah! By Allah, you know that Jibril (peace be upon him) came down and prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he came down again and prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed and the people prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him), until he counted five prayers. At this Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said to Urwah: Look at what you are saying, O Urwah! Was it Jibril who fixed the time of prayer? Urwah said to him: This is how Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud told it to me. The narrator said: So Umar bin Abd al-Aziz continued to recognise the time of prayer by a sign until he departed from this world.

Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and said: O Mughirah, what is this? By Allah, you know that Jibril (peace be upon him) came down and prayed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, and the people prayed five prayers in this way. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is how I have been commanded." At this Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said to Urwah: Know what you are saying, for it was Jibril who fixed the time of prayer. Urwah said: This is what Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud used to narrate from his father.

(Ibn Shihab said:) They were sitting on chairs in the gathering of Umar bin Abd al-Aziz, and Urwah bin al-Zubayr was with them. The mu'adhdhin called him for the Asr prayer, and he delayed before praying it. When they came back, Urwah bin al-Zubayr said: Do you know that Jibril (peace be upon him) came down to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), prayed with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the time of prayer? At this Umar bin Abd al-Aziz asked: What are you saying, O Abdullah? Urwah then said: Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud al-Ansari told me from Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Jibril (peace be upon him) came down to me, so I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him." (Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pray Zuhr when the sun had declined, and sometimes he delayed it in intense heat; and he prayed Asr while the sun was white and high, so that a man could walk to Dhu al-Hulayfah, a distance of six miles, before sunset; and he prayed Maghrib as soon as the sun had set; and he prayed Isha when the horizon had become dark; and he prayed Fajr in the darkness. Then one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed it when the light had spread, and after that he never again delayed it until the light had spread, until Allah took him (peace and blessings be upon him) in death.

Abu Bakr bin Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) reported that Urwah bin al-Zubayr used to narrate hadith to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz, who in those days was the governor of Madinah in the time of al-Hajjaj and al-Walid bin Abd al-Malik, and that was a time in which people used to delay the prayer. Urwah narrated to Umar, saying: Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari or Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud told me, and both of them had the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun had declined and said: O Muhammad, pray Zuhr. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) when the shadow of everything was equal to it and said: O Muhammad, pray Asr. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then he came when the sun set and said: O Muhammad, pray Maghrib. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed. Then he came when the red twilight had disappeared and said: O Muhammad, stand and pray Isha. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then he came when the dawn broke and said: O Muhammad, pray the morning prayer. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then he came the next day when the shadow of everything was equal to it and said: O Muhammad, stand and pray Zuhr. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed Zuhr. Then he came when the shadow of everything was twice its length and said: O Muhammad, pray Asr. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then he came when the sun set, (Maghrib has) only one time, and said: O Muhammad, pray Maghrib. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed. Then he came when part of the night had passed and said: O Muhammad, stand and pray. Then he came when the light had spread and said: O Muhammad, pray the morning prayer. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed. Then (Jibril (peace be upon him)) said: "Between these two is the (prayer) time."
