Khalid bin Umayr narrated: We went on a campaign with Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) and conquered al-Ubullah, and there we saw walnut shells lying about. We said: We have never seen stones which we could break open and eat (meaning we had never come across walnuts before).

Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) - whom Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had sent as governor of Basrah, and who was a Companion who fought at Badr - stood up and delivered a sermon, saying: "Indeed, this world has announced its end, and nothing remains of it except the like of the dregs of a vessel which its owner pours out. And indeed, ahead of you is another abode, so move to it with the best of what you have with you. By Allah! I saw myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and our mouths had become sore from eating the leaves of trees; today there is not one of us who is not the governor of some city. And I remember that Sa'd bin Malik and I raced to get a cloak; I took half of it and Sa'd took half. And it has reached me that between two of the door-leaves of the gates of Paradise is a distance of forty years, and a day will surely come when that gate will be crowded with people. And indeed there has never been a prophethood that was not superseded until it became a kingship. And I seek refuge with Allah from being great in my own eyes and small in the eyes of the people. And soon you will experience the rulers after me."

Khalid bin Umayr al-Adawi narrated: Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "To proceed: Indeed, this world has announced its end and has swiftly turned its back, and nothing remains of it except the like of the dregs of a vessel which its owner pours out. And indeed, you are about to move from it to an abode that never perishes, so move to it with the best of what you have with you. For we have been told that a stone is thrown from the edge of Hell and keeps falling for seventy years without reaching its bottom. By Allah! It will surely be filled. Are you amazed? We have also been told that between two of the door-leaves of the gates of Paradise is a distance of forty years, and a day will surely come when it will be filled with a great crowd. And I saw myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); we had no food except the leaves of trees, until our mouths became sore. And I picked up a cloak and tore it between myself and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas - one of the horsemen of Islam - and I wore half of it as my lower garment. Today there is not one of us still alive who is not the governor of some city. And I seek refuge with Allah from being great in my own eyes and small in the sight of Allah. And indeed there has never been a prophethood that was not transformed until its end was kingship. Soon you will experience the rulers, or be tested by them, after us."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) - who was the brother of Banu Mazin bin Sa'sa'ah and was one of the Companions - that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, after you will come days of patience; whoever at that time holds fast to the like of what you are upon will have the reward of fifty of you." They said: O Prophet of Allah! Fifty of them (those who come later)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather of you." They said again: O Prophet of Allah! Of them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather of you." He said this three or four times.
