Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Adi bin Hatim! How will you be when a lone woman riding in a litter sets out from the palaces of Yemen until she reaches al-Hirah, fearing no one but Allah, and nothing but the wolf for her sheep?" I said: But I have (the tribe of) Tayy, its bands and its men (still present)! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Allah will suffice for her and for all of them."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When Ramadan comes, fast thirty (days), unless you see the new moon before that."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 14243
Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me the prayer and fasting, and said: "Pray such-and-such, and pray such-and-such, and fast like this. When the sun sets, eat and drink until the white thread of the dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread, and fast thirty days unless you see the new moon before that." So I took two threads of hair, black and white, and kept looking at them, but the difference did not become clear to me. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "O Ibn Hatim! That only means the whiteness of the day from the blackness of the night."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have memorised everything you instructed me, except the white thread (being distinguished) from the black thread. Last night I slept with two threads beside me, looking now at this one and now at that one. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "The white thread only means that which appears (as whiteness) on the horizon of the sky, as against the black thread."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed: "Until the white thread of the dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread" [Surah al-Baqarah: 187], I took a black cord and a white cord and placed them under my pillow, then kept looking, but the difference did not become clear to me. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "Then your pillow must be very wide and long! It only means the night and the day."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about the saying of Allah Almighty: "The white thread from the black thread" [Surah al-Baqarah: 187], does it really mean two threads? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "No, rather it means the whiteness of the day and the blackness of the night."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 14249
Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by the white thread from the black thread? Are they really two threads? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your nape must be very broad indeed if you have (really) seen the two threads!" Then he said: "No, rather it means the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the day."

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed: "And eat and drink until the white thread of the dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread" [Surah al-Baqarah: 187], I took two cords, one black and the other white, and placed them under my pillow. At night I lifted them up and looked, but I could not distinguish the white from the black. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Hatim! Then your pillow must be very wide! It only means: eat and drink until the whiteness of the day becomes distinct to you from the blackness of the night."
