So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Thaqafi: "O brother of Thaqif, the Ansari has got ahead of you." The Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, I give him precedence. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him (the Thaqafi): "O brother of Thaqif, ask about your need, or if you wish, I will tell you what you have come to ask about." He said: That is what I would like more, that you tell me yourself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to ask me about your prayer, your bowing, your prostration and your fasting, and you are saying: What will I get for it?" He said: Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray at the beginning of the night and at its end, and sleep in the middle of it." He said: What if I pray in the middle of it too? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you are even better. And when you stand for prayer and bow, place your hand on your knees and spread your fingers apart; then raise your head until every limb returns to its joint. When you prostrate, settle your forehead firmly on the ground, and do not peck hastily. And fast the White Days: the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the Ansari and said: "Ask about your need, or if you wish, I will tell you." He said: That is what I would like more. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to ask about your setting out from your home heading for the Sacred House, and you are saying: What will I get for it? And you have come to ask about your standing at Arafah, and you are saying: What will I get for it? And about your stoning of the Jamarat, and you are saying: What will I get for it? And about your circumambulation (tawaf) of the House of Allah, and you are saying: What will I get for it? And about shaving your head, and you are saying: What will I get for it?" He said: Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for your setting out from your home towards the House of Allah, for every step your mount takes, Allah will write a good deed for you and erase a bad deed from you. As for your standing at Arafah, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, descends to the lowest heaven and boasts of them before the angels, saying: 'These are My servants who have come to Me from every distant mountain pass, dishevelled and covered in dust, hoping for My mercy and fearing My punishment, though they have not seen Me; so how would it be if they had seen Me!' So even if you had sins as many as the sands of Alij (desert), or as the days of this world, or as the drops of the sky, Allah would wash them away from you. As for your stoning of the Jamarat, it will be stored up for you. As for shaving your head, for every hair that falls you will have a good deed. Then when you circumambulate the House, you will emerge from your sins as on the day your mother gave birth to you."
