حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ هُوَ أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الطُّهَوِيُّ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا أَنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ظِلٍّ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَهُوَ يَطْلُبُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِذِ انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى حَائِطٍ، فَنَظَرْنَا فِيهِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَقَدْ أَغْبَرَ فَقَالَ: «لَا أَلُومُ النَّاسَ يُكَنُّونَكَ أَبَا تُرَابٍ» ، فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا تَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ، وَاشْتَدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: «أَلَا أُرْضِيكَ يَا عَلِيُّ؟» قَالَ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: «أَنْتَ أَخِي، وَوَزِيرِي تَقْضِي دَيْنِي وَتُنْجِزُ مَوْعِدِي، وَتُبْرِئُ ذِمَّتِي، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّكَ فِي حَيَاةٍ مِنِّي فَقَدْ قَضَى، نحبه، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّكَ في حياة منك بَعْدِي ختم الله له بالأمن والإيمان، ومن أحبك بعدي وَلَمْ يَرَكَ خَتَمَ اللهُ لَهُ بِالْأَمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ، وَأَمَّنَهُ يَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ الْأَكْبَرِ، وَمَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ يَبْغَضُكَ يَا عَلِيُّ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً، يُحَاسِبُهُ اللهُ بِمَا عَمِلَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in some shade in Madinah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was looking for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), until we reached the wall of a garden. We looked inside, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asleep on the ground, covered with dust. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not blame the people for calling you Abu Turab." I saw that the face of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) changed, and this weighed heavily on him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not make you pleased, O Ali?" He said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are my brother and my minister; you will pay off my debt, fulfil my promise, and discharge my obligations. Whoever loves you during my lifetime has fulfilled his pledge; whoever loves you during your lifetime after me, Allah will seal his end with security and faith; and whoever loves you after me without having seen you, Allah will seal his end with security and faith, and will grant him safety on the Day of the Greatest Terror. And O Ali, whoever dies while hating you dies the death of Jahiliyyah, and Allah will hold him to account for the deeds he did in Islam."
