The dabb (spiny-tailed lizard) was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and some of his companions said: It was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) neither declared it lawful nor unlawful. At this Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: What an evil thing you have said! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent precisely to declare things lawful and unlawful. What actually happened is that Umm Hufayd bint al-Harith came to visit her sister Sayyidah Maymunah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they brought food with them in which there was the meat of a dabb. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came after the night had deepened, that is, when darkness had fallen, and Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah, this is the meat of a dabb. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) held his hand back from it, and Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) also held her hand back from it. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Those who were present there ate it, and had it been unlawful he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have forbidden them from it. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not the food of our land, and we find it distasteful."

A dining cloth was brought on which there was bread and the meat of a dabb. He (peace and blessings be upon him) held back his hand and said: "This is a meat that I do not eat, but you eat." So Khalid bin al-Walid, Fadl bin Abbas and the woman ate, while Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I will not eat food that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has not eaten.
