This verse was recited in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), or he recited it himself: "Indeed, Ibrahim was an ummah (one combining all good qualities), devoutly obedient to Allah" [Surah al-Nahl: 120]. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah. The people said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! (The verse is:) "Indeed, Ibrahim was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you know what an ummah is? It is the one who teaches people goodness. And the qanit is the one who obeys Allah and His Messenger.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah, upright in faith, and he was not of the polytheists. Thereupon Farwah, a man from the tribe of Ashja', said: He has forgotten; (the verse is:) "Indeed, Ibrahim." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Who has forgotten? We used to liken Mu'adh to Ibrahim. He was asked about the ummah, and he said: The teacher of goodness. And he was asked about the qanit, and he said: The one obedient to Allah and His Messenger.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah (a nation in himself), devoutly obedient to Allah, upright." It was said to him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! (The verse is rather) 'Indeed, Ibrahim was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah, upright' [Surah al-Nahl: 120]." He said: "Did you hear me mention Ibrahim?" Then he said: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah, upright." He said: "We used to liken Mu'adh to Ibrahim (peace be upon him)."

He was asked about the ummah, and he said: "One who teaches good." And he was asked about the qanit, and he said: "One who is obedient to Allah and His Messenger."

Farwah bin Nawfal al-Ashja'i says that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah, upright." I said to myself: Abu Abd al-Rahman has made a mistake; the verse is rather "Indeed, Ibrahim." (Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: "Do you know what the ummah is, and what the qanit is?" I said: "Allah knows best." He said: "The ummah is the one who teaches people good, and the qanit is the one who is obedient to Allah and His Messenger; and Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was just like that: he taught good and was obedient to Allah and His Messenger."
