حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، ثنا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، عَنِ السَّرِيِّ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ نَاجِيَةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: إِنَّ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ كَانَ أُمَّةً لِلَّهِ قَانِتًا حَنِيفًا، وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: مَا نَرَاكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ تُحَدِّثُنَا بِشَيْءٍ مَا تَدْرِي مَا هُوَ، يَقُولُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ {إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ} [النحل: ١٢٠] ، وَتَقُولُ أَنْتَ: إِنَّ مُعَاذًا، قَالَ: مَا يَزَالُونَ يَسْمَعُونَ مِنِّي حَقًّا فَيُنْكِرُونَهُ، إِنَّ الْقَانِتَ الْمُطِيعُ لِلَّهِ، وَكَانَ مُعَاذٌ كَذَلِكَ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah, upright, and he was not one of the polytheists." At this a man said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! We see you telling us something you do not know; Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says 'Indeed, Ibrahim,' and you say: 'Indeed, Mu'adh.'" He said: "These people keep hearing the truth from me, yet they do not accept it. The qanit is the one obedient to Allah, and Mu'adh was like that."
