Abu Nadrah narrates: I came to Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) during the (first) ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, and he had a house which he had set apart for narrating hadith. Just then a ram was led past him, and he asked its owner: For how much did you buy it? He said: For twelve dirhams. I said: If I had twelve dirhams, I would buy a ram with them, sacrifice it and feed my family. When I stood up, Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) messenger followed me with a purse containing fifty dirhams. I have never seen dirhams with more blessing in them than these; he gave them to me seeking reward, while I was in need of them.

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) took some people on a sea voyage. When this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "He has taken people between whom and the water there is nothing but planks (of the ship). By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if they perish - or he said a word like it - I will take their equal number from the tribe of Thaqif."

It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) married one of the wives of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: By Allah, when I married her, I did not marry her out of desire for wealth or children; rather, I wanted her to tell me about the nights of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). So he asked her: How was the night prayer of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)? She said: He would pray the Isha prayer, then order us to place a vessel of water by his head and cover it. When he woke (from sleep) during the night, he would put his hand in the water and wipe his face and hands, then remember Allah Almighty for as long as he wished, then he would wake (from sleep) again and again until the time came at which he would stand for his (tahajjud) prayer. Then Ibn Buraydah said to him: Who told you this? He said: The daughter of Uthman bin Abi al-As told me. He said: By Allah, she is trustworthy.
