Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a young man at that time, said: We came as a delegation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) found me the best of them in acquiring the Qur'an, and I had surpassed them all in (memorising) Surah al-Baqarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have appointed you as leader over your companions, even though you are the youngest of them. So when you lead a people in prayer, lead them according to the weakest of them, for behind you are the old, the young, the weak and those with needs. And when you are a collector (of zakah), do not take the shafi', that is, a pregnant (animal), nor the rubba (one that has recently given birth and is suckling its young), nor the male of the sheep; and a man's favourite (best) property is his more than yours. And do not touch the Qur'an except when you are in a state of ablution. And know that Umrah is the lesser Hajj, and that an Umrah is better than the world and everything in it, and a Hajj is better than an Umrah."
