حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا أَشْعَثُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ: حَمَلَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ نَاسًا فِي الْبَحْرِ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ: «حَمَلَ نَاسًا لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ الْمَاءِ إِلَّا الْأَلْوَاحَ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَئِنْ هَلَكُوا - أَوْ كَلِمَةٌ نَحْوَهَا - لَآخُذَنَّ عِدَّتَهُمْ مِنْ ثَقِيفٍ»
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) took some people on a sea voyage. When this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "He has taken people between whom and the water there is nothing but planks (of the ship). By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if they perish - or he said a word like it - I will take their equal number from the tribe of Thaqif."
