Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came until he stayed with Abu Kulthum al-Dawsi, and they discussed the middle prayer (al-salat al-wusta) among themselves. He said: We too differed about it just as you differ, while we were in the courtyard of the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and among us was the righteous man Abu Hashim bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah bin Abd Shams (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: I will find out about it for you. So he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was at ease with him (peace and blessings be upon him); he asked permission, entered upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), then came out to us and informed us that it was the Asr prayer.

Samurah bin Sahm said: I stayed with Abu Hashim bin Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was ill, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit him, and he began to weep. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: What makes you weep? Is it some pain that is distressing you? Or is it grief over the world? Its best has already gone. He said: Neither this nor that; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a counsel, and I wish I had acted upon it. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps you will come upon wealth that will be distributed among people, and of gathering wealth only a servant and a mount suffice you." Then I found it, and I gathered it.

Abu Wa'il said: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) visited his maternal uncle Abu Hashim bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was ill and weeping, and he said: O uncle! What makes you weep? Is it some pain that is distressing you? Or is it greed for the world? He said: Neither this nor that; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a counsel which I did not act upon. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Hashim! You will see wealth that will be given to people, and of the whole world only a servant and a mount in the path of Allah suffice you." And today I see that I have gathered wealth (contrary to it).

Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) visited his maternal uncle, and when he saw him he said: What is the matter with you, anxiety and greed for the world? He said: No, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Perhaps you will come upon people who prefer wealth, whereas for each one of you, of the world, only a house and a mount in the path of Allah suffice."

Yazid bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Abu Hashim bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) had a moustache which he would tie behind the nape of his neck. So I said: What is the matter with your moustache, when what has come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about trimming the moustache has come? He said: I had trimmed my moustache, then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over me and said: "When did you trim your moustache?" I said: Just now. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not trim it until you meet me (again)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away before I met him (peace and blessings be upon him) again, so I will never cut it until I meet him (peace and blessings be upon him).
