Abd al-Rahman bin al-Zajjaj said: I said to Shaybah bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Uthman! People claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Ka'bah and did not pray in it? He said: They have lied. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs between the two pillars, then pressed his stomach and his back against them.

Sayyiduna Shaybah bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn. By Allah, it was not Islam or any recognition of it that brought me out; rather, I resented that Hawazin should prevail over Quraysh. So, while standing beside him (peace and blessings be upon him), I said: O Messenger of Allah! I see piebald horses? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Shaybah! None sees them except a disbeliever." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck my chest with his hand and said: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." Then he struck it a second time and said: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." Then he struck it a third time and said: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." By Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had not lifted his hand from my chest after the third time before there remained none of Allah's creation more beloved to me than him (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: Then the people clashed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a she-camel or a mule, with Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) holding its bridle, while Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was urging his mount on. Then the Muslims fled, and Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called out in his loud voice: Where are the first Muhajirun? Where are the people of Surah al-Baqarah? And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), pressing forward, was saying: "I am the Prophet, no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." So the Muslims turned back and clashed with swords, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the battle has grown fierce." The narrator said: And Allah defeated the polytheists.

Shaybah bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on the campaign of Hunayn, I remembered my father and my uncle, whom Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with them both) had killed, and I said: Today I will take my revenge on Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So I came to him and saw that Abbas was on his right, wearing a white coat of mail as though it were silver, and he brushed the dust off it. I thought: This is his uncle; he will not abandon him. So I came to his left, and there was Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith. I thought: This is his cousin, and he will not abandon him. So I came from behind him and drew closer and closer, until nothing remained but for me to strike at him (peace and blessings be upon him) with the sword, when suddenly a flame of fire rose before me like lightning, and I feared it would scorch me, so I retreated backwards. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and said: "Come, O Shayb!" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my chest, and Allah drew Satan out of my heart. I raised my eyes to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that moment he was more beloved to me than my hearing, my sight, and such-and-such. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Shayb! Fight the disbelievers." Then he said: "O Abbas! Call out to the Muhajirun who pledged allegiance beneath the tree, and to the Ansar who gave shelter and support." I could liken the Ansar's turning back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to nothing but cows turning back to their calves, until they descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) like a dense thicket. The narrator said: The spears of the Ansar seemed to me more dangerous to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than the spears of the disbelievers. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ayyash! Hand me some pebbles." The narrator said: Allah made the mule understand his (peace and blessings be upon him) words, and it crouched down until its belly nearly touched the ground. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took some pebbles and threw them at the faces of those disbelievers, and said: "May the faces be disfigured! Ha Mim, they will not be helped."

Sayyiduna Shaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Ka'bah and prayed two rak'ahs, and he saw pictures in it, so he said: "O Shaybah! Relieve me of (the matter of) these." This weighed heavily on Shaybah, and a man from the people of Persia said to him: If you wish, I will paint over them and smear them with saffron. And he did so.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaybah bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer in the Mosque of al-Khayf, then said: "There are three things about which the heart of a believer never harbours deceit: sincerity in deeds, sincere counsel to the leaders of the Muslims, and holding firmly to their community, for their supplication encompasses them from all sides."

Shaqiq said: A man sent some dirhams with me as a gift to the House (the Ka'bah). I entered the House while Shaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on a chair, and I handed them to him. He said: Are these yours? I said: No, and if they were mine I would not have brought them to you. He said: Since you have said that, know that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sat in the very place where you are sitting, and he said: I will not leave until I have distributed what is in the Ka'bah among the poor of the Muslims. I said: You will not do that. He said: I certainly will; and why (do you say) that? I said: Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw its place, and so did Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and they were both more in need of this wealth than you, yet they did not touch it. So he stood up just as he was and went out.

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They are the two men whom I follow.
