Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had only one mu'adhdhin; no one other than him gave the adhan for him (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit on Friday, he would give the adhan at the door of the mosque, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came down, the iqamah would be called. Then it remained the same in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and then it remained the same in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), until, when the time of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and the people had increased, he began to have the first adhan called in the market, on a house of his called "al-Zawra'". The adhan would be given on it, and then when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sat on the pulpit, his first mu'adhdhin would give the adhan, and when he came down, the iqamah would be called.

This continued until the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and he founded cities. It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the fay' that Allah had granted at Hunayn from the spoils of Hawazin, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) spread the distribution widely among the people of Makkah, among Quraysh and others, so the Ansar became angry. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to them in their dwellings and then said: "Whoever here is not one of the Ansar, let him go out to his camp." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the testimony of faith and praised Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and then said: "O company of the Ansar, what you have said about these spoils has reached me, the spoils which I gave preferentially to some people to win their hearts over to Islam, so that they might remain steadfast after today, Allah having brought Islam into their hearts." Then he said: "O company of the Ansar, has Allah not favoured you with faith, singled you out for honour, and called you by the best of names: the Helpers of Allah and the Helpers of His Messenger? Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man of the Ansar; and if the people were to travel along one valley and you along another valley, I would travel along your valley. Are you not content that the people should go away with these spoils, the sheep, the livestock and the camels, while you go away with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" When the Ansar heard these words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they said: We are content. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Answer me regarding what I have said." The Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, we were in darkness, and Allah brought us out into the light through you; we were on the brink of a pit of fire, and Allah saved us through you; and we were astray, and Allah guided us through you. So we are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as Prophet. So, O Messenger of Allah, do whatever you wish with complete freedom and authority. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, by Allah, had you given me an answer other than this, I would have said: You have spoken the truth. Had you said: 'Did you not come to us driven out, and we gave you refuge; belied, and we believed you; forsaken, and we supported you; and did we not accept what the people had rejected of you?' Had you said this, you would have spoken the truth." The Ansar said: Rather, the favour and grace belong to Allah and His Messenger, upon us and upon others besides us. Then they began to weep, and their weeping grew intense, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also wept with them and was pleased with them; and these words of his (peace and blessings be upon him) were more gladdening to them and more precious than any wealth.
