Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the blood money (diyah) was one hundred camels of four kinds: twenty-five hiqqah she-camels, twenty-five jadha'ah she-camels, twenty-five bint labun she-camels and twenty-five bint makhad she-camels. This continued until the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and he founded cities. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Not all people can find camels, so value the camels at the rate of an uqiyah each." So it was fixed at four thousand dirhams. Then the price of camels rose, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Value the camels again." So they were valued at the rate of one and a half uqiyahs, which came to six thousand dirhams. Then the price of camels rose again, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Value the camels." So they were valued at the rate of two uqiyahs, which came to eight thousand dirhams. Then the price of camels rose again, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Value the camels." So they were valued at the rate of three uqiyahs, which came to twelve thousand dirhams. So he fixed twelve thousand dirhams for the people of silver, one hundred camels for the people of camels, one thousand dinars for the people of gold, two hundred suits of clothing for the people of garments, each suit worth five dinars, one thousand sheep for the people of sheep, one thousand goats for the people of goats, and two hundred cows for the people of cattle.
