Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this account from his own mouth to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: I was a Persian man from a village called Jayy in the region of Isfahan. My father was the dihqan (landlord) of his village, and I was the dearest of all Allah's creation to him. His love for me grew to such an extent that he kept me confined in his house as a slave girl is confined. I became diligent in Magianism (fire-worship), until I became the keeper of the fire, keeping it kindled and not letting it die down for a single moment.
My father had a very large estate. One day he was busy with some work, so he said to me: "My son! Today I have been kept busy from (looking after) my estate, so go there and inspect it." He gave me some instructions about it, then said: "Do not be late in returning to me, for if you are late, you will become more important to me than my estate and you will distract me from all my affairs."
So I set out for his estate. As I went along the way, I passed by a church of the Christians. I heard their voices from there; they were praying. Because my father had kept me confined at home, I knew nothing of people's affairs. When I heard their voices, I went in to them to see what they were doing. When I saw them, I was greatly impressed by their prayer and became drawn to their religion. I said: By Allah! This is better than the religion we follow. I did not leave them until the sun had set, and I abandoned (going to) my father's estate.
Then I asked them: Who gave you insight into this religion? They said: A man in Syria. Then I returned to my father, who had sent men out searching for me, and I had distracted him from his work. My father said: My son! Where were you? Did I not give you the instructions I gave you? I said: I passed by some people who were praying in their church, so I went in to them, and I stayed with them until the sun set while they were praying. My father said: My son! There is no good in that religion; your religion and the religion of your forefathers is better than it. Then he locked me up in his house.
I sent a message to that Christian and said: When a caravan comes to you from Syria, let me know about it. So a caravan of Christian merchants from Syria came to them, and they let me know about it. I said to them: When they have finished their business and are about to return to their country, tell me. So (when the time came) I threw off the iron (fetters) from my feet and set out with them until I reached Syria.
When I reached Syria, I asked: Who is the most learned person in this religion? The people said: The bishop (usquf) in the church. I went to him and said: I have become drawn to this religion, and I would like to be with you, serve you, serve you in your church, learn from you and pray with you. He said: Very well, come in. So I began to live with him. He was a bad man; he would urge people to give charity and encourage them in it, then when they gathered charity and brought it to him, he would hoard it for himself and give nothing of it to any poor person, until he had amassed several jars of gold and silver. I hated him intensely because of this conduct of his.
Then he died, and the Christians gathered to bury him. I said to them: This man was bad. He used to urge you to give charity and encourage you in it, but when you brought charity to him, he would hoard it for himself and give nothing of it to the poor. They said: How do you know this? I said: I will show you his treasure. They said: Then show us. I led them to it, and they brought out gold and silver. When they saw this, they said: By Allah! We will never bury him. So they crucified him and then stoned him. Another man was appointed in his place.
Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have never seen a man who did not (observe) the five prayers better than him. He was the most detached from the world and the most eager for the Hereafter, and no one was more diligent (in worship) night and day than he was. I came to love him as I had never loved anyone before. I stayed with him for some time, then death came to him. I said to him: O so-and-so! I have been with you and loved you as I have never loved anyone, and now there has come to you from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, what you see. So to whom do you entrust me, and what do you command me? He said: My son! By Allah, I do not know anyone who is on the way I was on. People have perished; they have altered (the religion) and abandoned much of what they used to follow, except for a man in Mosul, so-and-so; he is on the way I was on, so go and join him.
When he died and was buried, I went and joined the man in Mosul. I said to him: O so-and-so! So-and-so instructed me at the time of his death to join you, and told me that you are on his way. He said: Stay with me. So I stayed with him, and I found him the best of men on the way of his companion. Not much time passed before he too died. When death came to him, I said to him: O so-and-so! So-and-so entrusted me to you and commanded me to join you, and now there has come to you from Allah what you see. So to whom do you entrust me, and what do you command me? He said: My son! I know of no one to whom I could command you to go, except a man in Ammuriyah, in the land of the Romans, who is on our way.
When he died and was buried, I went and joined the man of Ammuriyah and told him my story. He said: Stay with me. So I stayed with the best of men in the way of his companions and their affairs, and I earned (through my own effort) until I had a few cows and a few goats. Then the decree of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, (death) came upon him. When death approached him, I said to him: O so-and-so! I was with so-and-so, and he entrusted me to so-and-so, then so-and-so entrusted me to so-and-so, then so-and-so entrusted me to you. So to whom do you entrust me, and to whom do you send me? He said: By Allah! I do not know anyone who is on the way we are now on, to whom I could command you to go. But the time of a prophet is about to overshadow you, who will be sent with the religion of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He will emigrate from the land of the Arabs to a land - I think he said - of date palms, in which there are signs that do not remain hidden. He will eat from a gift but will not eat from charity, and between his two shoulders will be the Seal of Prophethood. If you are able to reach that land, then do so.
Then he died and was buried. I stayed in Ammuriyah as long as Allah willed. Meanwhile some merchants of Banu Kalb passed by me. I said to them: Will you take me to the land of the Arabs, and I will give you these cows of mine and these goats of mine? They said: Yes. So I gave them (my livestock) and they took me along with them. When they reached Wadi al-Qura, they wronged me and sold me to a Jewish man. I began living with him. I saw the date palms and hoped this was the land that my companion had described to me, but I was not (fully) certain in my heart.
While I was still with him, a cousin of his from Banu Qurayzah came to him, bought me from him and brought me to Madinah. By Allah! As soon as I saw Madinah, I recognised it from the description my companion had given. I settled there. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and for as long as he stayed in Makkah I heard no mention of him, because I was occupied with the work of slavery. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated to Madinah. By Allah! I was at the top of one of my master's date palms doing some work, and my master was sitting beneath me, when suddenly a cousin of his came, stood by him and said: May Allah destroy Banu Qaylah! By Allah, they are gathering around a man who has come to them from Makkah today, claiming that he is a prophet. When I heard this, I was seized with such joy that I thought I would fall upon my master. I came down from the date palm and began saying to his cousin: What is he saying? My master became angry, struck me a hard slap and said: What has this to do with you? Get on with your work. I said: Nothing in particular; I only wanted to ask him about what he said.
I had something that I had gathered and saved. When evening came, I took it and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was then at Quba'. I went in to him and said: I have learned that you are a righteous man, and that with you are your companions who are strangers and in need. I had this as charity, and I thought that you were more deserving of it, and I placed it near him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Eat," and he himself did not eat. I said to myself: This is one sign. Then I went back from him and gathered something more. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved to Madinah, and I came to him again with it and said: I have seen that you do not eat charity; this is a gift with which I honour you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from it and also ordered his Companions, and they ate as well. I said to myself: These are two signs.
Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Baqi' al-Gharqad; he had followed the funeral of a man of the Ansar and was sitting down. I greeted him with salam, then went around him and began looking at his back to see whether I could see the seal that my companion had described to me. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me going around, he understood that I wanted to confirm something that had been described to me, so he removed his cloak from his back. I looked at the seal and recognised it, and I bent over it, kissing it and weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Turn around (come in front)." So I turned around and sat in front of him and told him my whole story just as I have told it to you, O Ibn Abbas! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased that his Companions should hear this (story).
Then slavery kept Salman occupied until he missed (taking part in) Badr and Uhud with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salman! Make a contract of manumission (mukatabah)." So I made a contract with my master to plant three hundred date palms for him and for forty uqiyah (of silver). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Help your brother." So the people helped me with date saplings: one with thirty, one with twenty, one with fifteen, one with ten, and one with as many as he could, until I had gathered three hundred date palms. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go, Salman, and inform me, so that I may plant them myself with my own hand." So I dug holes for them and my companions helped me, until, when I had finished, I came to him and told him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out with me to the orchard; I would hand him the saplings and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would plant them with his own hand, until we had finished. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Salman, not a single sapling of them died. I had paid off the date palms, but the money was still owed by me. Then a piece of gold the size of a hen's egg came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the wealth of one of the military expeditions, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What happened to the Persian mukatab?" So I was called. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this and pay off what you owe with it." I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is this compared to what (remains) owed by me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will pay it off for you through it." So I weighed out from it for them, and by the One in whose Hand is the soul of Salman, (I weighed out) forty uqiyah, and I paid them their due in full. Salman was freed and took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battle of the Trench, and after that he did not miss any battle.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from a journey, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) received him and said: May Allah keep you pleased as His servant. The narrator said: Then he married into the tribe of Kindah. On the night he went in to his wife, he saw that the house had been decorated and that some women were present in it. He said: Has the Ka'bah moved to Kindah, or has it been struck by humrah (a disease)? My friend Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to keep of belongings only as much as a traveller's belongings, and to keep of women only those whom we marry. So the women went out, and he went in to his wife. He said: O woman! Will you disobey me or obey me? She said: Rather, I will obey you in everything. He said: My friend (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us that when one of us goes in to his wife, he should stand and pray and tell her to pray behind him, then he should supplicate and she should say Amin. So he did so, and she did so. When he sat in the gathering of Kindah, a man from the people asked him: O Abu Abdullah! How was your morning? How did you find your wife last night? He remained silent. The man asked again. He said: What is the matter with one of you that he asks about what walls and doors have concealed? It is enough for one of you to ask about something, and then either be answered or be met with silence.
