Kathir bin Abdullah al-Muzani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that in the year of the Confederates (al-Ahzab) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) marked out the line of the Trench, starting from Ahmar al-Basakhtayn, which was at the edge of Banu Harithah, until it reached al-Madhabih, and he allotted forty cubits to every ten men. Then the Muhajirun and the Ansar disputed over Salman al-Farisi (may Allah have mercy on him), for he was a strong man. The Muhajirun said: Salman is one of us, and the Ansar said: Salman is one of us. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Salman is one of us, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt)."

And he was asked about Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) he knew the hypocrites best; he asked about them and was told about them."
The people said: Tell us about Salman. He said: "He attained the first knowledge and the last knowledge. He is, from among us the People of the House, a sea that never runs dry."
The people said: Tell us about Abu Dharr. He said: "A vessel of knowledge which the people have neglected." The people said: Now tell us about yourself. He said: "This is what you were after! Whenever I asked, I was given, and whenever I kept silent, I was given without asking. And indeed, between these two jaws there is abundant knowledge."
Abu al-Aswad and Zadhan al-Kindi (may Allah have mercy on them both) narrated: One day we were with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people found him in a cheerful mood and good temper, so they said: O Commander of the Believers! Tell us about your companions. He said: About which of my companions? They said: About the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: All the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are my companions, so about which of them are you asking? They said: About those whom we have seen you mention gently, more than the rest of the people, and invoke blessings upon. He said: About which of them? They said: About Abdullah bin Mas'ud. He said: "He read the Qur'an and learned the Sunnah, and that is sufficient." The narrator said: By Allah! We could not tell what he meant by his words "that is sufficient": whether reading the Qur'an and knowing the Sunnah is sufficient, or Abdullah himself is sufficient.
The narrator said: Then he was asked about Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "He used to ask a great deal; sometimes he was given and sometimes he was withheld. We said: Tell us about Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "A man in whose flesh, blood, hair and skin Allah has so blended faith that wherever he goes, faith goes with him. It is not fitting for the Fire to consume any part of him."
We said: Now tell us about yourself. He said: "Wait, Allah has forbidden praising oneself." A man said: But Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And as for the favour of your Lord, proclaim it" [Surah al-Duha: 11]. He said: "Then I proclaim the favour of my Lord: whenever I asked, I was given, and whenever I kept silent, I was given without asking."

When the people have prayed Isha, they return in one of three states: among them are those who bear sin and have no reward, those who have reward and bear no sin, and those who have neither reward nor sin. The one who bears sin and has no reward is the man who takes advantage of the darkness of the night and the heedlessness of the people and runs headlong into disobedience. The one who has reward and bears no sin is the man who takes advantage of the darkness of the night and the heedlessness of the people and stands up to pray. And the one who has neither reward nor sin is the man who prays and then sleeps. And beware of excessive, exhausting strain (in worship); hold fast to moderation and constancy."

They said: We have come to you from a brother of yours in Syria. He asked: Who is he? They said: Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Then where is the gift that he sent with you?
