Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that fighting broke out among Banu Amr bin Awf bin Awf. News of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed Zuhr, then went to them to make peace between them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! If the time of Asr comes and I have not come back to you, then tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." When the time of Asr came, Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan and the iqamah, then told Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he went forward. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived while Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the prayer, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way through the people until he stood in the row right behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people began to clap. It was Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) habit that once he entered the prayer, he would never look around until he had finished it, but when he saw that the clapping would not stop, he turned and found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) behind him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to carry on with the prayer, and gestured with his hand like this. The narrator said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) waited for a little while, then praised Allah for what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said, then walked backwards. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he went forward and led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed his prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! When I signalled to you, what prevented you from carrying on with the prayer?" He replied: It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "When something happens to you, let the men say tasbih (Subhan Allah) and let the women clap."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a young man of the Ansar was newly married. He went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition, then came back from the road to see his family, and saw his wife standing in the room. He pointed his spear at her, and the woman said: Go inside and see what is in the house. He went in and saw a snake coiled up on his bed. He pierced it through with his spear, then planted the spear in the courtyard of the house. The snake writhed and jolted, and the man jolted too; then the snake died and the man died as well. This incident was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some Muslim jinn have come to settle in Madinah," or he said: "These houses have some dwellers (jinn); when you see any of them, seek refuge (with Allah) from it, then if it comes back, kill it."
