Sa'd bin Khaythamah (may Allah be pleased with him) (whose kunyah was Abu Khaythamah) narrated: I stayed behind from going with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the expedition of Tabuk, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had set off. Then I entered an orchard and saw a shelter that had been sprinkled with water, and I saw my wife. So I said: "This is not fair, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should be in the scorching wind and heat while I am in shade and comfort." So I got up, went to a water-carrying camel and took it, and took a few dates as provision for the journey. My wife called out: "O Abu Khaythamah, where are you going?" I set out intending to reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until, when I was on the way, Umayr bin Wahb al-Jumahi caught up with me. I said: "You are a bold man, and I know where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is, and I am a sinful man; so stay behind me until I can meet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) alone." So Umayr stayed behind me. When I came near the army and the people saw me, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let it be Abu Khaythamah." I came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was close to being ruined." Then I told him my story, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said good words to me and supplicated for me.
