Qays said: We went to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) to visit him in his illness, and he said: "I do not know what people say, but I wish that what is in this chest of mine were burning embers." When he died, people looked, and in it were found one thousand or two thousand.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that al-Harith al-Ghatafani came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad, give us half of the dates of Madinah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not until I consult the Sa'ds." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin al-Rabi', Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Khaythamah and Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them), and said: "I have come to know that the Arabs have shot at you from a single bow, and al-Harith is asking you to give him half of the dates of Madinah. If you wish, give it to him this year, until you consider your affair later." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this revelation from the heaven, so that we must submit to the command of Allah, or is it your own opinion or inclination? For our opinion follows your opinion and inclination. And if you only wish to spare us, then by Allah, we have seen that we and they were equal; they could not obtain a single date from us except by purchase or as hospitality." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Here it is; you hear what they are saying." At this they (the Ghatafanis) said: "You have broken your word, O Muhammad." At this Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses: "O Harith, whoever breaks faith with the protection of his neighbour, Muhammad never breaks faith. And a man's trust, wherever you meet it, is like the breaking of glass: its crack is never mended. If you break your word, then treachery is among your own habits, and baseness grows in the roots of the sakhbar (a thorny shrub)."
