Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: I asked Urwah: What is meant by the longer of the two long surahs? He said: Surah al-A'raf.

Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I entered the mosque and Marwan bin al-Hakam was sitting there, so I sat with him, and he told us that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) had told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dictated to him this verse: "Not equal are those who sit back and those who strive" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. At that, Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! O Messenger of Allah, if I had the strength for jihad, I would certainly strive in jihad. Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down revelation upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) while his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh was on my thigh, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh became so heavy upon me that it felt as if my thigh would be crushed. Then the state of revelation lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Except those who are disabled" [Surah al-Nisa: 95].

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting at the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with my thigh beneath his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was dictating this verse to me: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting and listening, and he said: By Allah! O Prophet of Allah, if I had the strength for jihad, I would certainly strive in jihad. Thereupon Allah sent down Qur'an upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning this, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh became so heavy on my thigh that I thought it would be crushed. Then the state of revelation lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back, except those who are disabled" [Surah al-Nisa: 95].

Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down revelation upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) while his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh was on my thigh, and I felt such heaviness on my thigh that I thought it would be crushed. Khalid bin Ma'dan relates: I heard Abd al-Malik bin Marwan narrating from his father (Marwan), from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I suffered from sleeplessness at night, and I complained of it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: O Allah, the stars have set and the eyes have become still, and You are the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, let my eye sleep and make my night peaceful." I said it, and the sleeplessness went away.
