Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with some people who differed about the middle prayer (al-salah al-wusta), and I was the youngest of them, so they sent me to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask him about the middle prayer. He said: I went to him and asked him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead the Zuhr prayer in the intense midday heat, while people were occupied with their midday rest and their markets, and only one or two rows would pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in humble devotion" [Surah al-Baqarah: 238]. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some people must desist from this, or else I will burn their houses."
