There was a slave called Kaysan. He renamed himself Qays, attributed his lineage to his manumitter (master), and went off to Kufah. His father rode to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Commander of the Believers! My son was born on my bed (that is, he is my own son), then he turned away from me and attributed his lineage to his manumitter, who is my master as well. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): Do you not know that we used to recite: "Do not turn away from your fathers, for that is disbelief on your part"? Zayd said: Indeed, yes. Umar said to him: "Go and tie your son to your camel, then set off, striking your camel with the whip once and your son once, until you bring him back to your family."
