Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 4799 — Sahl bin Sa'd relates that he saw Marwan

Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that he saw Marwan bin al-Hakam sitting in the mosque, so he came and sat beside him, and he told us that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) had told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dictated to him this verse: "Those of the believers who sit back and those who strive in the way of Allah (are not equal)" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. Just then Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) came while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was dictating this verse to me, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, if I had the strength for jihad, I would certainly strive in jihad; and he was a blind man. Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down revelation upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) while his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh was on my thigh, and I felt such heaviness on my thigh that I thought it would be crushed. Then that state lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "Except those who are disabled" [Surah al-Nisa: 95].
