It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Alhamdu lillahi 'ala kulli hal' (Praise be to Allah in every state); and let the one who hears him say: 'Yarhamukallah' (May Allah have mercy on you); and let the one who sneezed reply: 'Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum' (May Allah guide you and set your affairs right)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he had a small storeroom, and a ghoul (a jinn) used to come and enter it. He complained about it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you see it, say: Bismillah (In the name of Allah), answer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then it came, and he said this to it and seized it. It said: I will not come back. So he let it go. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What did your captive do?" He said: I seized it, and it said: I will not come back, so I let it go. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will certainly come back." So I seized it two or three times, and each time it would say: I will not come back. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come and ask: "What did your captive do?" He would say: I seized it, and it said: I will not come back. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "It will certainly come back." Then I seized it again, and it said: Let me go, and I will teach you something which, if you say it, nothing will come near you: it is Ayat al-Kursi. So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It spoke the truth, though it is a great liar."

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I had some dates in my storeroom, and I began to notice that they were decreasing. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow you will find a cat in it; say: Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." When the next day came, I found a cat in it, and I said: Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It turned into an old woman and said: I adjure you by Allah to let me go, for I will not come back. So I let her go. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did the man and his captive do?" I told him her story, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She lied; she will certainly come back. Say to her: Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then she again turned into an old woman and said: O Abu Ayyub! I adjure you by Allah to let me go this time, for I will not come back. So I let her go; then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me the same as he had said before. I did this three times, and the third time she said to me: O Abu Ayyub! I adjure you by Allah to let me go so that I may teach you something which, when a devil hears it, he does not enter that house. I asked: What is it? She said: Ayat al-Kursi; no devil hears it but that he flees. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She spoke the truth, even though she is a liar."

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I caught a female jinn, and she said to me: Let me go, and I undertake to teach you something which, when you recite it, none of us will be able to harm you. I asked: What is it? She said: Ayat al-Kursi: "Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence" [Surah al-Baqarah: 255]. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She spoke the truth, though she is a liar."

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I used to be troubled by something that came into the house at night, so I complained about it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: There was a skylight in one of our rooms. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lie in wait for it; when you see something, say: Be gone, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summons you." He says: So I lay in wait, and suddenly something dangled down from the skylight. I leapt at it and said: Be gone, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summons you. And I seized it, and it pleaded humbly with me and said to me: I will not come back. The narrator says: So I let it go. When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did your captive do?" I told him what had happened, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, it will certainly come back." The narrator says: I did this three times; each time I would seize it and tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what had happened. When it was the third time, I seized it and said: You will not leave me until I take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It adjured me and pleaded humbly with me and said: I will teach you something which, if you say it at night, neither any jinn nor any thief will come near you. The narrator says: It said: Recite Ayat al-Kursi. The narrator says: So I let it go; then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did your captive do?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! It adjured me and pleaded humbly with me until I took pity on it, and it taught me something which, when I say it, neither any jinn nor any thief will come near me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It spoke the truth, even though it is a great liar."
