Al-Sha'bi narrates: I heard al-Rabi' bin Khuthaym when it was mentioned in his presence that whoever says these words: "There is no true god except Allah, alone, He has no partner; His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He has power over all things," it will be for him equal to freeing four slaves. (Al-Sha'bi) said: I said to al-Rabi' bin Khuthaym: By Allah, what you people say about it does not please me; I consider it better than four hundred and four (slaves). I asked al-Rabi' bin Khuthaym: Who told you this? He said: Amr bin Maymun al-Awdi told me. So I met Amr bin Maymun and said to him: Did you tell al-Rabi' this? He said: Yes. I asked: From whom did you hear it? He said: Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla told me. So I met Abd al-Rahman and said to him: Amr bin Maymun has told me this. He said: He spoke the truth; it was I who told him. I asked: From whom do you narrate it? He said: From Abu Ayyub, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
