The grandson of Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Amr al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from him that he met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel al-Adba'. He said: I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah forgive you." Then I went round to the other side, hoping that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray for me in particular, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "May Allah forgive you."
At this a man said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling on the fara'i' and the 'ata'ir? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes may sacrifice the fara' and whoever wishes may not, and whoever wishes may sacrifice the 'atirah and whoever wishes may not; and in sheep there is their sacrifice." Then he said: "Listen! Your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred in this month of yours."

Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Amr al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Mina or Arafat. The Bedouins would come, and when they saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) face they would say: This is a blessed face. The narrator said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, forgive us." The narrator said: Then I went round and said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, forgive us." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to spit, so he took his spittle in his hand and wiped it on his sandal, disliking that it should touch anyone around him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he said: "O people! What day is this? Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you with regard to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. O Allah, have I conveyed? Let those present convey this to those who are absent." The narrator said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded charity, saying: "Give charity, for I do not know; perhaps you will not see me again after this day of mine." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed Yalamlam as the miqat for the people of Yemen, from which they should enter ihram, and Dhat Irq for the people of Iraq — or he said: for the people of the East. And a man asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about the 'atirah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes may sacrifice the 'atirah and whoever wishes may not, and whoever wishes may sacrifice the fara' and whoever wishes may not." And he said: "In sheep there is their sacrifice," gesturing with the fingers of his right hand: he placed them on the joint of the middle finger and the index finger and bent its tip slightly.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Amr al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel al-Adba'. Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was a heavily built man. He dismounted and drew close to him (peace and blessings be upon him), until his face was level with the knee of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned down and passed his hand over the face of al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), and the radiance remained on the face of al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) until his death. Then al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Prophet of Allah! Pray for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, forgive us." Then the narrator related the rest of it like the hadith of Abd al-Warith.
