The grandson of Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Amr al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from him that he met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel al-Adba'. He said: I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah forgive you." Then I went round to the other side, hoping that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray for me in particular, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask forgiveness for me. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "May Allah forgive you."
At this a man said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling on the fara'i' and the 'ata'ir? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes may sacrifice the fara' and whoever wishes may not, and whoever wishes may sacrifice the 'atirah and whoever wishes may not; and in sheep there is their sacrifice." Then he said: "Listen! Your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred in this month of yours."
